I read EMPtek are great speakers (especially for the price), but really need to be paired with a good sub. I live in an apartment, so I can't have window rattling bass in any event. Will a JBL 550P sub provide enough oomph to balance out the sound if you go with R5bis as fronts? Any thoughts?

I haven't heard that much about the JBL 550P, but I suspect it has the capability of getting down to around 35 Hz. The price I saw on Amazon tells me it's not worth close to THAT price, so if you can find a deal for around $250 it might be all you need in your apartment. But if you are willing to spend around $500, then I'd look at the SVS PB-1000*: http://www.svsound.com/subwoofers/ported-box/pb-1000

Others to consider are:

http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-...oofer--300-629

Jim Wilson's review: http://www.hometheatershack.com/foru...er-review.html

*But in order to recommend any sub properly, we would need to know the total cubic footage (the listening room and any rooms open to the listening room).

Music area: Magnepan 3.6, McIntosh MC2205 & C48, SVS SB13-Ultra, Oppo BDP 95 and assorted equipment.
Movie area: EMP Tek R5Bi, PSA XS30, Denon X2000, Oppo BDP 83.

The cherry version is $290 on Amazon. It's not going to have a lot of output, but for an apartment it might work well.

Craigslist is also an option, I found a like new HSU STF2 for $200 and it pairs very nicely with the towers.

I may be a coward, but I feel like at this point in its lifespan, craigslist is just a more efficient way of finding a way to get yourself jacked/murdered, at least in NYC

Room is 14 x 30 (with wood floors), but any sub that is going to fill that room to the satisfaction of the people on this forum is likely to get me forcibly evicted, I suspect

Thanks for the heads up. When I typed in the model number that sent me to Amazon, I saw the price at over $500. Now I see that it is under $300, which makes it a better value.

You can never have too much sub and no one says you cannot turn the gain down! I think people are just trying to make sure you don't buy an underpowered dude...like my Martin Logan Dynamo 300. A "dynamo" it is not...

I'm having a problem with my first 1010 sub. It's not lighting up. I'm not sure when it went, but I suspect sometime in the last month.

The light does not go on. Has anyone had a problem like this? I'd guess it's the amp, but maybe there's a fuse?

I'd check the fuse first (and cross your fingers). The fuse is usually located behind the power connector.

I just realized that I had a different power cord with it. It only has 2 slots vs 3 on a normal 3 prong plug. Would that matter? I'm not sure where I put it. I tried the cord from the other sub and it did not work.

This thing is not meant to be serviced. There isn't a way to get the power connector off the plate, it's melted in. I guess to stop resonance.

I finally found the fuse, just below the receptacle on the outside. It's hard to see and open. They are intact.

I think about 2 years old, I believe that amp is only covered for 1. I got the second when they were clearing out. I think $299 and 249. I can't find a 3rd party amp that covers the hole.

We'll see what Brian says tomorrow. It looks to be a difficult repair since the speaker cable is melted onto the board for some reason. See the knotted ring at the top of the image.

In a smallish dedicated HT (11.5' X 17' X 9') I am going with EmpTek. What is the ideal EmpTek setup for this sized room?

I know I need two R55Tis and one R56Ci. But what about the side and rear surrounds?

Do I go with 7.1 and use four R5Bis mounted on the wall even with the tight space?

Or, do I forget the rears and go with two R55Wis, one on each side?

Or something completely different?

Oh, for the sub, I am looking at the HSU STF-2. Thoughts on that choice?

That's about the size of my room, I have the center, small towers (discontinued) and bookshelves with 2 subs. There is no shortage of sound. I usually run at -9. I'm using heights too, the on wall plopped on top of the towers until I get them mounted permanently.

One side is open to the kitchen, about 5 feet wide and a passthrough.

I've got a smaller dedicated theater, so I'll share with you what I'm using. I've got the towers and the large center in the front. I've got the e55wi surrounds on the side. For the rears I'm using a pair of SVS prime satellites. I went with the SVS in the rear because I heard them during a local electronics expo and was impressed by them, so I purchased them on the spot.

Thanks for the replies!

A couple of questions....I don't see an in wall option made by EmpTek. What would be good side and rear surrounds (in wall or on wall) that would match the timbre of Emp Tek towers and CC? Is matching the timbre important since they are the surrounds?

What is everyone using for their surrounds?

Thanks in advance, I really want to make a good decision so I am hoping some of you Emp veterans can help me out. I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Well, they certainly aren't timbre matched and many would think not a good match with any decent front L/C/R, but I use Monoprice in-walls as my surround/back surround speakers along with the R5Bi and R5Ci and we love the sound. 13.5x17.5x8 living room, open on 2 walls to others. As gregoryperkins stated, "There is no shortage of sound."! Love the EMP/RBHs for both music and movies. Surround channels don't carry nearly as much information as the front soundstage.

Re: the STF-2 - Subs are a completely different beast altogether, in a room that size it wouldn't be my first choice. Depends a lot on your budget and expectations from a sub, but the VTF-15 MK2 should pound in that room. The PSA XV15SE wouldn't be a bad choice either, although it's not rated to go as low as the VFT-15 MK2. If you're handy there's DIY/AIY options as well.

If you are going to have speakers that are not timbre matched, it would be your surrounds for sure.

It's fine to have mis-matched surrounds, and those Monoprice ones are a good affordable option. I use E5Bi for my surrounds and am very happy with them, but I do listen to a good bit of multi-channel music so it's easier to notice if something isn't matched in the back. For movies they will work great.

Timbre matching isn't that important for surrounds unless you are a big fan of 5 (or 7) channel stereo. Otherwise you should be fine if you don't go with EMP surrounds. I've got SVS rears and I have never noticed any issue with them mixing with the rest of my system.

Well that's scary to think about. I hope both of mine stay strong. I was going to say you could pick up a stand-alone amp (ie: Inuke dsp, etc etc) and it that way. With one though, might be overkill. If mine went, I might go that route and give them more power & possibly put in new 10's. At that point though, you might as well just buy new, nicer subs.

I'm glad they have some spare plate amps. What'd they make you pay? You can PM me if you're more comfortable
