Beautiful subwoofer for sure! I wonder how much better performance over the old emp tek model and how it compares to the svs/hsu and others in same price range? For the price its pretty interesting. Can't wait for actual review.

We all know that SQ is the most important quality for any speaker or subwoofer...but, man, most subwoofers are huge UGLY black boxes! I got two front Klipsch (Rw12d, Synergy) that make me look pretty good and that ain't easy!

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and EMP e5Bi surrounds, Outlaw LFM1 Plus sub, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub

I was actually just thinking about this last night, the last I have seen about it is that thread you linked. Hopefully we can expect one soon, I am interested to see how it fares against the PB-1000, LV12R, and VTF2-MK4.

I love my SVS cylinders but they're not about to win any beauty awards. EMP makes some nice looking gear!

Funny you say this, I was thinking that next to the EMP subs, the SVS cylinder subs were much better looking that any of the huge black boxes. My Outlaw sub rocks, but it is better heard and not seen!

I don't know if your Outlaw does, but the new X12 has an in-layed black plexiglass top that makes it look very sharp! Well as sharp as a black box can look...

Thinking about getting a pair of the R5Bi and a sub OR the R55ti towers for a stereo setup. Would an integrated amp like the NAD D3020 or the Cambridge Azure 351a be a good match?

Thanks!

How large is your room? How far away will you be seated? How loudly do you play music? Will you ever be expanding this to a 5.1 audio/video system?

While the R5Bi’s are a very nice speaker, most 2-way speakers with a 5-1/4” driver are not sensitive (sensitivity rating is 85 dB, which is typical). That means, in order to get them to play at loud levels, one needs a relatively powerful amplifier (say 80 - 120 watts/channel). I feel that both the R5Bi’s and R55Ti towers need a subwoofer, but one can get by with the towers … for awhile. The towers have a sensitivity rating of 88 dB. I do prefer the bookshelf speakers for music (more accurate and less colored), but it could very well be that you’d prefer the towers. The towers have an excellent upper bass/lower midrange response.

Stereo integrated amps are like stereo receivers without the tuner section. One has a larger selection of receivers than integrated amplifiers. Take a look on Crutchfield and compare the specs between the two.

You will want a sub even with the towers. I started with the towers thinking that I could get away with it, but eventually I added a sub and I'm not into heavy bass, just nice fill in the low end.

Tough call, I personally prefer the towers over the bookshelves for music, but as others have said, you really benefit from a sub in either scenario. I would probably start with the towers, and then save up for a sub. An integrated amp is a fine choice if you just want a simple stereo setup. Integrating a sub becomes a little more difficult because you won't have electronic bass management, but it just takes some trial and error.

Personally I would be looking at the NAD 326 instead of the D3020, I think it's a bit more robust and will work better in a decent sized room.

You can do bass management if your sub is decent quality and has speaker level in/out (sometimes called high level). You run the speaker outputs from the amp to the sub speaker inputs, then the sub speaker outputs to your speakers. You can control the crossover via the sub knob. If you just connect the amp speaker out to both the speakers and the sub, you can't control what goes to the speakers, you can limit the sub, but not the speakers which means there may be some overlap in the bass between the speakers and sub. If you want to do it this way, then bookshelf speakers are a fine approach too.
What I don't like about speaker inputs/outputs is that you have to run 8 wires and sometimes you have to route them in not so convenient ways.
Bass management with integrated amps can be a pain if you are used to the simplicity of an AVR.
Alternatively, I would look at an affordable full AVR and use the bass management in the AVR with the LFE out. Something like the Denon S500BT, that gives you Bluetooth too:
http://www.accessories4less.com/make...uetooth/1.html
(You can go for more powerful models of course if your budget allows)

Regarding their B-Stock items…how do you know what’s what? Like what is actually scratch & dent vs. what is old stock?

I see some towers are listed as “rebranded.” Does that assume it is NEW?

Their website needs some work…

My guess is the scratch and dent are products that were sold and returned. Perhaps there is a slight cosmetic issue, or it was damaged in shipping, etc. It also could just be a straight return, someone who tried the speaker and decided to send it back. If you want you could email Brian at EMP and ask about a specific speaker, perhaps they could send you a picture of the defect (if one exists).

All rebranding means is that they've changed the logo from EMP Tek to RBH (once RBH took over full control). Same speaker, different logo.

Of course you will be. I too have ribbon tweeters, and not once was I ever expecting a dome tweeter to compete. If I thought that it could, then I’d be in for disappointment .

Oh I knew it wouldn't be able to really compete, but it's the first thing that I noticed. These little bookshes do a lot right though. I probably won't get to the review until Sunday. I turned 21 Tuesday (23rd), and my boss gave me Friday off to get an early jump on the weekend and as his birthday present to me. Needless to say, I shouldn't be writing or rather posting a review until then (Sunday/Monday)

Happy birthday! That was a big day for you. I hope you went out and celebrated. If not, then enjoy the day off and do some celebrating .

Enjoy the audition and let us know all about it when you can.
