Looks good! Do you keep your speakers without their clothes on or just for the picture?

I just took them off for the pictures. I did remove the tweeter covers though as you can see from the center channel picture.

Looks like it's time to get a new display, it's looking small compared to the speakers!

Any particular reason why you sold them? Upgrade to something else? How long did you have them?

No, those weren't mine. Mine were listed here in the classifieds.
Sold them because I'm going to purchase something more just for 2 channel music. Looking to spend more than $XXXX for a pair of speakers.
Big difference at that price point compared to the Emp's. The Emp's are a good speaker at a good price but were not really what I felt were great for music.
Just my opinion, not trying to offend anyone...redface.gif

I'm curious if you tried room treatment before spending thousands on speakers?

A separate building actually.
My room is 12X18X 8.
It has 8 inch thick walls.
Fully treated. Sides, front, back walls and ceiling.
It is set up pretty well for music listening.
Just looking for better speakers, probably always will be. Please don't take as a complaint of the EmpTek's

What about B&W 802 Diamonds? You need amps for those as well.

What about them? I'm sure they are nice but I haven't settled on anything yet.

I have some amps, tube and SS. Everything I have is always replaceable/upgradeable. At this point most of the hardware is pretty good, not the most expensive.
Just continuing my trip through audio...Retirement is not far off and I would like to be set up well when that time comes, that's all..
The Emp Tek's were just a stop along the road.. a good stop just not the end of the road.

No, I fully understand. I have an evolutionary approach to my sound system. New equipment moves into the primary and the old to other rooms. Speakers are very dependent on the type of music you listen to and personal preference.

I originally got the e5ti for my living room for listening to music. They were not right for the room which is narrow and untreated, so I moved them into the main system and brought my Polk 50s in as replacement. They worked better in the room but aren't anything special.

Someday I will have a nice little room that does music very well, but my hearing may be worse then too! I've always wanted a set of planar speakers, maybe some day.

gregoryperkins,
good to hear we share the same philosophy. Everything is reletive I guess. Having a dedicated room took years for me to realise.

One of the nice things about this hobby are the surprises along the way. The EmpTek's were pretty nice, just not what I was looking for. Many here are very happy with them and I think that is great!

I also do not believe High cost speakers to be the absolute answer either but my quest is taking me in that direction. I'm finally at a point in my life that I can entertain the thoughts of that type of purchase (within limits).

I agree! Most would probably not listen to what I do so they will find different gear more suitable for sure.

Keep working toward getting that room, you will really enjoy it. I know I really do!

I REAAAALY wish EMP would come out with a dual 12 or dual 15 setup. Hell...just build me the cabinet and I'll add my own subs/amp! haha

Maybe we can convince them to build a dual 12/15 sub.

Yeah I've given it some thought. My biggest...well basically my only issue is aesthetics. I've never done vinyl work or have any clue how to go about with something like piano black, which i'd really like. I've built all my ported and sealed boxes for my car, IB baffle, built a false floor, etc. I can definitely do that work, but the finishing is what I'm stuck on. I don't want anything that looks too tacky in the house. I think something with some 12 or 13 w6's would be nice. I enjoyed my 12w6v2's when I had them (been running through A LOT of car audio lol), but there are a few other subs out there I'd like to try for HT.

- Wayman Tisdale - If You Want Me To Stay
- Literally anything from Alice in Chains self titled album from the MTV Unplugged sessions

Anyone else have "go to" songs?

Hey ousooner2, thanks for the song recs.. I tried them out last night (albeit not the greatest quality - grooveshark off the ps3) but you're right, they're excellent examples where the emptek's shine! And it closely matches a lot of style of song choices I started trying out and becoming quite happy with. We all know these speakers work out great for open, many of which are acoustical, and very cleanly mastered music. But my concern now is with heavier song choices and getting the speakers to a point where I'm as happy with those as I am with more laid back choices..

For example, take these two Zeppelin songs (each amazing in their own right):
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Led Zeppelin - Kashmir

StH - starts out wonderful, sounds clean, vocals are crisp, upper range is dead on, speakers disappear - all the good stuff.. but then that ending, man that ending.. i want it come out and grab me by the collar - but i get nothing. all the sudden i realize i'm listening to the song and not in to it..
Kashmir - again, please, just reach out, grab me by the gut and squeeze my soul awake - let me "feel" the song (not literally as in bass but falling in to it) - it's not that it sounds bad, just lost and anti-climactic, even a bit muddy at times..

Now granted, no EQ has been done and I don't have the sub hooked up.. I won't be making any final judgements until I do that this weekend.
But I'm curious, has anyone else found this to be the case themselves with their setup? I'd love to hear any opinions based on those two songs and if there are any suggestions out there.. I honestly really want to keep these speakers as they're gorgeous and I'm pretty happy with a lot of the music played so far.. I just need that push over the fence and maybe some help with ideas.

Thanks everyone!

I'll download this/these albums in FLAC and try them out. All my stuff in lossless format...is yours? There is A LOT of horribly compressed music out there so you have to be careful with what you're judging speakers with

StH - @ what point do you feel "let down"? Any problem spots you're hearing? I'll see what I hear
Kashmir - Same thing...

Yeah, I hear ya. I do have an mp3 library that ranges between 192-256 cbr or 0 vbr. But that's for convenience, when I do these direct listens they're off CD's in the ps3 connected directly to the receiver by fiber.. I do have some Flaming Lips 5.1 DVD-A that i'd like to try out too once the other speakers are hooked up..

As far as where I'm being let down, it's a couple places.. Definitely on the low end (around 80-200).. Midrange and high-mids are incredible, sub-bass don't care about since the sub will take care of it once hooked up. I ran some test tones this morning and starting around 200hz things started to get lost. As I progressed down to 100-60, it got to a point of being almost imperceptible. I would have to crank the volume so high to get anything out of them which can be partially due to ear sensitivity, but I wouldn't expect that much. So for now to counter correct it I've bumped a few more db on that end in the front L/R eq... Helps, but eventually I had to start using some DSP to open everything up a bit as well (but not enough create too much gain compression)..

Perhaps the towers just feel a bit too laid back for me on their own (again, total personal taste), but I'm feeling more confident I can direct them a bit more forward with some adjustments. I definitely don't want the sizzle and boom (i work in film and it's the equivalent to me seeing everyone with their tv's set to vivid - i just cringe).. But just as I don't like seeing muddy greys that should be deep blacks, I want to hear my low end as well.. wink.gif

Gonna be a fun weekend for sure..

Oh god....people that leave their sets like it came out of the box OR change them to be even worse....OUCH. Looks so bad lol

I'll run some test tones in the midbass area and see what I come up with also. I didn't really get to listen to StH too much as I got sidetracked doing a few things around the house. How far away are they from walls? Have you checked to make sure all your midbass drivers are working? I know it sounds obvious, but just thought I'd ask.

All the drivers seem to be in working shape (good idea to check though) and the fronts have a good 12-15" between the port holes and the wall so should be ok there. I did spend some time with them this weekend and I'm definitely becoming happier with them after a bit of EQ and DSP as mentioned earlier. The sub worked out great as well.. Crossed it over at 60 (80 was tempting but just a bit too boom-y for me - 60 seemed much cleaner). I am getting a hum from it so I need to swap some cables and see if the one I bought is insulated enough (50' mediabridge off of amazon). This week will be movie/surround sound tests and will continue to update if I discover anything. wink.gif

Don't know your budget, but the Onkyo 3009 should be at a low right now. The 818 would be a good buy too. I have the 3009 & it's a beast.
