the dealer near me has just sold the grand utopia em to be delivered to the lucky buyer next week.

i just went to the shop and had a last minute audition before they pack up for delivery, and they are going to get the maestro instead of another grand utopia em.

i listened to the blue coast collection thru a meridian 800 and decode by a berkeley alpha dac. wonderful sound and i did not want to leave.

track 12 the bass has clear and delicate textures that i have not experienced such quality for a long time in other systems, including the older utopias.

a brief audition of the stella em.

very nice indeed. overall balance much better than the maestro. of course consider the price over maestro. :-(

software used was the "meant to be" from blue coast records.

just wondering why maestro and scala not having the em drivers?

I would guess that the EM tech would really add to the price. Plus the Maestro and Scala both use 11in drivers. The Maestro has two and the Scala has one. It is possible that with drivers that size the EM tech really did not add that much to the overall sound so the price increase was not warranted. But, the Maestro does have a little something extra. One of the 11in drivers is named "Sub-woofer with a Magnetic Damping System(MDS)". The other 11in driver is just a "woofer". That may be a "baby" version of the EM systems in the larger models. Just a thought though.

the em has power supplies. grande em has 6 levels of adjustments and the stella has 3 for intensity of the bass.

also the grand em can adjust angles of the tweeters and mid driver cabinets. stella is fixed as factory considers stella not tall enough to warrant the additional adjustments.

the coming em subwoofer will be interesting. how about getting a pair of diablo plus 2 em subs and do electronic crossover?

The Diablo speakers and the new sub should be a pretty impressive system. Even though I have a great sub, and there is no way I would be able to afford the new EM sub, I am anxious to see what it is like. I have experienced the Sub Utopia Be. If the new EM sub is better sounding and if it has more output, trust me, you won't need two. One was enough to shake a 29,000 sq foot building. Next to my current sub, that is the best, loudest and cleanest sub I have ever heard or experienced.

Does anyone use the in-wall Electra speakers? I would be curious how they compare with the Electra bookshelf models.

The nice thing about the Focal Electra in-walls is that you can buy an additional on wall frame so that the speaker turns into an on wall, and thus can be moved around. When you go in-wall, you are stuck with positioning once they are in, on wall can move around. The frame comes in white or black lacquer.

Wow. That is up there for sure. I guess for people who want matching systems and who are already spending the money on a Utopia EM speakers 20k would be doable for them. But again, the Utopia series was never meant for the masses anyway. It has always been for the people who do not want to compromise at all.

the em bass is so good and different from permanent magnet designs.

i have heard the grand, stella, maestro and scala in the same room with same electronics. to my ears i prefer the clean and textured bass from the em drivers which is so different.

if there is no patent for the design u can bet there will be other manufacturers going this route.

I have the micro utopia be speakers and the electra cc1000be center, submersive sub, I had wanted to get the sr1000 be surrounds but they are way to pricey.

I settled on the monitor audio golds gsfx, they are a true monipole, dipole design and are switchable. sr1000be are only bi-pole, di-pole, so for multichannel music the golds will be ideal.

a glimpse of the new utopia 3 Voce

the metal plate affixed with the tweeter and mid drivers can be rotated on either side 90 degrees, but that cannot be done by users. local distributor/importer/retailer will do it when you order your speakers as center or front/sides. Perhaps the crossover network needs to be changed too.

Can fellow owners of the Focal Diablo Utopia advise on how many hours of burn-in it takes before the speakers really open up? The sound character has been changing rapidly over the past week and the treble is currently quite harsh.
