so, im going to be getting a 2nd system soon. and im looking around for speakers. a few things to consider

1) this will NOT be a primary system, so although i do want quality, i dont expect to be amazed
2) this is going in a smaller room, so i wont be cranking it up to 11. but...
3) these will recieve a rather small amount of power. i can promise it will be no more than 50W a channel
4) seeing as its a 2nd system, i would like to be well under $300 for the pair
5) im open to used/b-stock/etc

based on the research ive done, it seems like the best efficiency i can get is around 90db. the Klipsch RB-10, and the Paradigm Atom are both 90db. i know in my old mis-matched system, my fronts were rated at 90db, and my center was 96. that difference caused me to lower the level of my center when watchign movies and such. however, ive heard if its 89 VS 90, or a differnece of just one or two, it should make that big of a difference

with all that being said, can anyone recommend a more efficient (small) speaker? its safe to assume ive looked at most of the "major" companies. also, am i really goign to get that big of a difference with volume if i find a speaker thats rated 3 or 4db higher?

any and all feedback is welcome. thanks in advance!

Why are you worried about more efficiency if you said these speakers are going in a small room with a 50 watt amp?

90db is more than enough, especially since you said you wont be turning it up loudly.

Just find some speakers than sound good to you. Sound quality is way more important than sensitivity ratings. Go out and listen!

Klipsch dont sound anything like Paradigms, your priority should be sound. Find characteristics that you like and go from there.

Cambridge Soundworks http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/s...cgi?category=0 is having a nice sale right now. Quality speakers for a very reasonable price. Their MC305 speakers have a sensitivity of 90 and the MC155 have a sensitivity of 89. Both can be had individually or in 5.1 sets at a great price. The coupon code of JULY25 gets you an extra 25% off at checkout.

Something to think about. 90db speakers at 12 feet with 50w can play at 98 db SPL. At 6 feet they will go to 104 db SPL.

Unless your level of low volume is wayyy different than mine, you are fine.

How the speakers sound is much more important so go out and listen. Find something you love in your price range. shouldn't be too hard.

What is your definition of small?

Hearing is believing vs Believing is hearing.

small amount of power = 50W MAX
small speaker = 2 way, woofer smaller than 6" is what ive been looking at. there are a few examples listen up to, one (Klipsch RB-10) even has a 4" woofer.

Another vote for dropping the efficient idea and starting over. Efficiency would be something to worry about if you were married to a 5W amp, not so at > 30W or so, for your use.

Check out the Energy RC Mini at Vanns or the NHT Absolute Zero.

I agree that you should be able to find lots of stuff at $300/pair. If you do buy online, you'll find companies that discount and so you can get even more speaker for the money (speakers have a relatively large markup).
