That's not good.
You might want to check with Jeff to see if they need some sort of check (i.e. REW measurements).

Real smoke, or just a few puffs of dust?

real smoke. I've been running them with the Denon 4520 for weeks now with no problems, but they never came remotely close to the output from last night even with the Denon fully cranked.

If it's all three speakers smoking, it can't be the speakers problem.

Yes, both front at about the same time, couldn't see the center it's behind the screen. That's what I figured, not too worried about it.

I believe there is some support in the CD for shipping that has to be removed prior to use. I recall this being reported before.

If you take yourself too seriously, expect me to do the exact opposite

Yes there is a small piece of styrofoam in the CD to protect the phase plug during shipping or to keep anything from getting in there. Did you remove this?

That's a first, good idea to remove the woofer and look at the Xover. What does the smoke smell like? Are you sure it's the speakers and not the amps?
I'll leave the Colorado smoke jokes out of this cause if the're smoking, it's serious.

so you guys were right (I think). It wasn't the foam on the compression drivers, those are off. I took off the woofer and I think the plastic on one of the capacitors may have got burnt by one of the ceramic looking inserts. I sent some pictures to Jeff and I'll wait to see what he thinks.

No, the new JTR speakers with the 2 way CD have a foam ring around the phase plug that needs to be removed. Nothing in any of the pre 2015 speakers to remove.

Hi raynist,
since you already experienced the 3 line up,is there any significant improvement?from 212 to 210 is that called downgrade? Thanks

The improvement from the 212 to the 210RT is that they are pretty much full range speakers for music. I do not need subs when listening to 2 channel music. I like the way the 210's sound over the 212 and my subs for music. I expect to find little difference for movies once my 3rd 210 arrives this week I can probably set the crossover point a bit lower since the 210 goes down to 38hz vs 60hz for the 212.

The 212HTRs are better than the 212HTs. R = Reference.

The 212HTRs are exceptional for music and movies. They just aren't full range, and integrating speakers well with subs for music can be tricky. With a full range speaker, that integration is perfected at the factory, but they also have disadvantages (unless you use subs).

If it's strictly movies and running subs. Then 228htr's. What subs if so?

Any of those would work well.

I love the coax driver, so that eliminates the 212HT. The 212HTR has that for $2300, which is a bit over your budget.

Comparing the 210RM and 228HTR, the 228HTR is more efficient, but the 210RM is a sealed design, which can be easier to cross over with subs.
If you have a powerful amp, I think I would lean toward the 210RM, but if not, I think I would lean toward the 228HTR.

If you are planning to buy your surrounds as well, you will get a discount which will make the 212HTR very close to your budget.

In the meantime, I don't feel I'm missing much but would love to hear a Dirac setup (hey Warren!).

We watched the 2003 Phantom of the Opera last night and frankly, I can't imagine a better sounding setup and I've heard a quite a few. We just saw the play in San Francisco (good seats too) and the difference in SQ was amazing ... To quote my lovely wife, "everything sounds better in the cave" (her name for the room).
Arcam's upcoming receivers have Dirac.
They will , knowing Arcam , sound great.
Especially with music.
My guess is a processor will follow next spring or so.

Bug plagued in the first gen of HDMI recievers AFAIK these problems have been solved.
Pricey though.

No. Not too many consumer products have clip indicators. With the Maraschino's, you would need more than 8V of input (+20 dBu) to create clipping with most content due to the amp's input sensitivity and low gain. You can possibly clip if connected to a subwoofer and are only sending very low bass to it since this is high voltage with a low crest factor.
