The Cap 4000 are beasts for sure. I just helped my friend install and set up two Cap 118's and they are absolutely fantastic. He has a really nice finished multi purpose room with JTR 228HT's for LCR and now 2- cap 118's for subs. The room is pretty big and without knowing the dimensions I will say its probably around 6500cu ft. He uses a Denon 4520 which I think has 280hz/ch @4ohm . He was previously running an Epik Empire and I think 12"lava. The bass these two caps 118's put out in his room was really good, and the intergraiton with the mains was flawless when we allowed audyssey to set the XO point (60hz). We tried raising it to 80hz but no matter how much we played with distance settings we could not get it to give that super smooth transition that we were experiencing at 60hz and it was confirmed with some group delay measurements.

Here are some pics of the room and a couple of measurements for frequency response and GD. Green is the 60hz XO and red is 80hz XO. At the end of the day we stuck with the 60hz and it was incredible. We had the Eagles in Melbourne Blu Ray cranked past reference and it was fantastic. Anyone looking for an unbelievable value in quantity and quality of bass should check these out. I am sure the cap 4000 will deliver in spades as well!

Here are some pics. I wish I had taken more of the whole space because it is a really cool looking space. Another awesome JTR driven theater!

We only have a dual 4 ohm so the coils can be paralleled for 2 ohm or series for 8 ohm. The 4 ohm driver has a single 4 ohm coil.

Christmas in May!!

Kicked my a$$ getting these off of the palette and into my house myself. Luckily only one step from the garage into my room. Used furniture sliders once they were in the house.

Also got a 228x for the garage

I've thought about making a Captivator 215RT which would be the same as Noesis 215RT but without the horn.

Great idea, but why not a Captivator 315RT without the horn? That's a great form factor for a sub IMO

Looks nice Ray!!! I am willing to bet that you might find that you don't need the caps LOL, these things are sick. Personally I think I had more bass with the 215RT's than when I did before I crossed them with the Triax's.

I am thinking that with 6 15's, they are probably similar to 2 Triax's.

I am running Audyssey right now. Did a quick run to make sure I have the levels set correctly in my Inukes. Strangely it did not set the 215RT's to full range. Set them to 40hz. That seems odd. I made sure all crossovers/filters in the iNuke were disabled.

Listened to about 3 hours of music tonight and really love the ways these sound. Did a full Audyssey calibration also. Tomorrow will do the sub distance tweak. I put a high pass filter on these using my inuke DSP. Lowest i could go was using a butterworth at 20hz and 48db slope. I am thinking this isn't a good combo though as the slope is so steep there is no output around 20hz. I watched several movie scenes with no subs and could really tell I was killing the low bass with this filter.

For anyone using the 215's and an inuke, what high pass are you using? I have a mini DSP 10x10 with 8 free inputs. I could use that to run my high pass as that allows for settings under 20hz.

Audyssey ruins the 215s imo. If you can bypass l and r in your Audyssey menu, give it a shot, it's wayyyyyy better sounding in my room..... Like night and day better. The bass is way better in every way.

Blasting brown notes for 10 years and counting!

Why do you think audyssey makes your surround, sub and center sound better but not your LR?

Reduce the crossover slope to 12db (I use Linkwitz-Riley) as that will provide some additional LF extension but protect the drivers from overzealous use. Audyssey not setting the 215RT's to full range indicates there is a problem. I have run it many times and they were always set to large.

Opinions are not facts.

Thanks

I turned off all of the EQ/crossover in the Inukes. Not sure what else could cause them to not be set to large. Maybe the onkyo 5509 sets all mains to 40hz if there are subs?

I can try a different Audyssey mic too and see if that changes things.

I ran some omnimic sweeps and they appear to be flat to 15-16. Will post a graph shortly.

3 curves together are the LCR full range with subs off.

Higher curve is the LFE channel with subs off

Read through this thread. It is very handy! I think you have to go into the PEQ and do a negative or something like that, but it is in this thread.

How to extend the high pass filter below 20hz in DCX2496

I have said that many times as Audyssey just neuters the 215's. I do the same as you as I bypass L&R and let Audyssey handle everything else. I had just posted a few weeks ago that I ran Audyssey for the first time in a couple of years and love what I got. My system just sounds so much better now. I was getting ready to unload my Denon (X7200WA) and I was going to look at Anthem AVM60 or even the XMC-1 to get away from Audyssey and try something new, but I was so impressed with the tune, I decided to keep the Denon.

Switched to a different Audyssey mic and it still sets the 215RT's at 40hz and not full range. I am thinking if you have subs this pre pro will only set down to 40hz. I graphed it with omnimic and they extend way lower than that.

Anyone else have the Onkyo 5508/5509 pre pro and the 215RT's or 215RM's?
