Horns In my experience tend to have a throaty bass, more violent.... is a good description I think.
I wanted the 215's for late night viewing to not wake the kid and to not have to power up everything just to play a game. I will be likely xover'n them at 60 - 70HZ, and will use them full range for music. I've already got everything ready for the EQ'n. and my opendrc hooked and ready!!
I love the OS so much for music that I ordered a third to round out the back of the room with the OS "sound'. To me the sound like live concert bass. Of course all of this justification and opinion on my part could be due to the fact that I can't fit the 215 behind my false screen wall! mad.gif

Chris, so the Slant 8 uses the 8cn552 plus has the 4550 bolted to the back or of the 8cn552?

Im not saying its bad but it is different. I also dont have the OS and but I have had 4 different horns and all had similar type of sound. horns are harder to intergrate into a music system, at least in my experience. Thats not to say it cant be done and cant wound just as good but maybe in Robs case, thats all it was vs what he's liking so much in his new system.

BTW 3 OS's???? good lord lord lol

My critique of the OS's for music was prefaced with my comment that I could not "easily" integrate them with the 212's for music. When Doublewing visited for a demo he described them as the best subwoofers he had heard and they are terrific. They are also huge and the foot print is an issue for most. That's why I chose these little monitor sized speakers ... tongue.gifbiggrin.gif

hmmm that is weird! I really want to make this Sherbourn 7350 be my amp for a long time to come but the buzz from the center was ridiculous. I tried a cheater plug awhile back but it didn't work. Perhaps someone could link one that was successful for them in this application?

And they still are!  Hard to describe............but clean, unadulterated sound is best I can do.   Two OS's were as clean or cleaner as a pair of DD-18's I've heard...........as clean or cleaner than dual TC Sound Ultra's I've heard too but more than double the output...............simply put..............fantastic subs!  The shear output is uncanny.........................wow falls well short of a description for dual OS's.

But there is a cost..................................dual OS's are too big...................dual OS's would just not be enough for smoothing either.  Quad OS's.........................yup.................but it wont be me!  ;):D

I was lucky that dual OS's (and dual sealed uxl18's) gave me a very smooth response. They are amazing subs if you can fit them. They blend seamlessly with my 212's.

Has anybody got the Triple 12HT up front and the Slanted 8's for surrounds that can mention the tonal differences, I hear a lot about the surrounds needing to timbre match the fronts for seamless panning eg. helicopter passing over your head etc etc.

I was planing to get the Triple 8's and S8's to match up, but, in the land of OZ secondhand Triple 8's I have never even seen for sale, so I jumped on a set of Triple 12HT's and S8's from the same seller.

Really hoping they timbre match ok. I read somewhere that timbre matching is most critical with the tweeters, I know the S8's I have (2011 model) use the BMS4550 cause I took them out and had a look. Anybody know the CD Tweeter in the T12 (2011 model) BMS 4550 also?

edit: I guess I will have to pull one out and have a look eek.gif

The t12's and the s8's match very well. Plenty of people including me have run that combo.

exactly. I am not up on the output calculations but I'm quite confident you sub output (even before you get you 215's) is more than three OS's. I'm just trying to keep up! In all seriousness even though I have worked extensively with the minidsp but I think having all three of the same sub will ultimately yield better integration for my room than my current mix of sealed and horn. Just my speculation but time will tell.

Your new set up with the 215's and all of your subs would be something I would really want to hear in person. Safe to say you won't be using the mid bass modules anymore?

I think you're thinking Frohlich, did it look like this?

I haven't seen any custom 212's with the wooden horn.

I too am interested in why some are doing custom horns? Are you taking the 212 horn and placing it in the 228? If that's done would it give you similar results when crossed over at 80 vs the regular 212?

it has been done because of size constraints with installation at the home.

As far as I know Jeff isn't offering wooden horns in the 212's, of course if you were set on it and willing to pay I'm sure he'd do it. I don't think there's any performance improvement with them either.

That picture that I posted of the 228 with the wooden horn is Frohlich's and it's a custom center channel using the cabinet of the 228 along with the 8" drivers and a wooden horn that allows the 4593 compression driver to work in that cabinet. I think Jeff called it the 318HT on facebook.

****correction***

He calls it the 328HT smile.gif

Do you plan to run the center channel horizontal or vertical?
