I'll just cut to the chase...I've been doing loads of research and am overwhelmed by receiver/speaker possibilities and have decided to ask for help. Did not see any current/active threads for my budget so here it goes:

Just received a Samsung PN58B550 from Best Buy as a college graduation gift and bought a Cheetah articulating wall mount to go with it from Amazon for $130 shipped. I am willing to spend another $1500-2000 on a receiver and either 5 or 7 speakers. I have a Sony SA-WM500 from a past HT system that I think it will be efficient enough to handle my capabilities in an apartment (can't be too loud), but am open to purchasing one if need be. The entire $1500-$2000 budget will be used on COMPONENTS, so anything else (speaker stands, etc.) is not figured in.

The room I am outfitting is 16' x 15'7" and is pictured here. I am not sure if I can place the TV against the opposite wall, but it may be a possibility.

My viewing/listening habits are as follows:
50% Gaming on PS3
35% HD TV viewing with emphasis on Sports & Movies.
10% Blu-Ray movies on PS3
5% Supplying music for parties (primarily Rap/Hip Hop/Rock/Classic Rock)

I have a preference for floorstanding speakers, but bookshelf are also fine.
I was thinking about going with a 7.1 setup with the new Onkyo HT-RC160 for $379/shipped, but it seems that many audio enthusiasts favor a 5.1 setup because of the better "bang-for-your-buck" and little/no difference in overall sound quality. This has left me at a standstill between 5.1 and 7.1. I am completely open to the possibilities, so feel free to give a 5.0 setup or 7.0 setup, or if you feel like it, both. Just felt like I need a few expert opinions. Thanks

I second the Denon AVR1910 it's ~ $550 w/ free s/h @ most auth online dealers

and Ascend 340SE fronts, 340SEC, 170SE surrounds will run you $998 also w/ free s/h so that's only < $1550

for a step up, you can get the Sierra-1s as your fronts and center-ch (and keep the 170s as rears) and that Denon for ~ $2154. and piece of mind. =D

good luck!!

Thanks for the input! I went ahead and ordered the AVR-1910 because I have always been a fan of Denon products. As for the speakers, what do you guys think of the TX-T12 System from Crystal Acoustics? It is definately in my price range with about $1000-$1400 left to spend. Not sure about the silver/gray finish but I'm not too worried about it.

No the link doesn't work -- aspx at the end

You have to go http://www.crystalaudiovideo.com/default.aspx?cnt=na

Then under speaker systems (don't click on speakers) choose the TX-T12

Completely off topic, but I thought I'd address the "aspx" issue since I've seen this more than once on this board. That extension just means they use Microsoft ASP.NET as their web site platform. The issue is just how this site is designed - using forms and Javascript rather than just regular links to the products. Just letting you know that "aspx" is not really an indicator for the problem any more than any other extension.

And now, back to the thread...
