ok i think it is high time for an official tom danley sound labs thread . there is great interest in danleys products but it is very hard to find it all . for such an inovative desighn the only reason it gets ignored is the pro audio side and looks . its time to move on and give an officail thread for there products. the few people that have there product post some pics and thoughts . i would love some photos of a front wall of sh50 in someones home theater . anyone?
Looking for ideas to a potential change to my HT system. I'll be moving soon which will provide an opportunity to change things up a bit.
Being budget minded of course, this is what I am looking for. A total 100% kick ass HT that excels in concert DVD playing. I want to feel like I am front row at the concert which means silky smooth highs, well balanced mids and a bass that you can feel through out your body. Here is what I have so far that just doesn't feel right to me, like something is missing.
Triple 12LF's for LCR powered by an XPA5
B&W 603 surrounds
8 18" CHT subs powered by Crest CC4000 and an iNuke.
System is loud, but seems separated to me. Highs are a little thin, mids seems lacking and the bass is OK. I've been thinking of changing out the JTR's to something, but can't figure out what would be a good fit. I'm hesitant to go with the Noesis as the highs are not smooth enough for me. Seaton's could be an option but the one speaker I have not explored, and know literally nothing about is the Danley products. I checked out the website but without a base of knowledge I don't know what to make of all the different options.
You should definitely take the Danley's into consideration. I strongly recommend it coming from a pair of JTR triple12's myself
Even after hearing the Noesis, there is still something about the voicing that I wasn't a fan of. It took me all of 2 minutes of listening to the danley sm60f molded horns to fall in love with them. Since then I have moved up to the sh50's and am absolute audio utopia right now. If you fancy a trip down to western NC I will happily demo the setup for you, but odds are I will be back up to Andrew's (gorilla's) place soon enough, and more than likely with the sh50's in tow if we do another main speaker g2g
On another note, Hey Ivan, tell me a little more about this dslp48!!! Would you be willing to send one out for me to demo and spread the word out to the DIY crowd?

Will an XPA-5 amp be OK to drive these sh50's for LCR? If and when I am ready, where do I buy these speakers? I might as well scrap my B&W 603 rears and get new rear speakers while I am at it....
Thinking ahead, sh50's for LCR and does Danley offer a reasonable rear/surrond speaker? Hopefully my 8 18" CHT subs can stay?
I would think the XPA-5 should suffice ... the SH50s are 100 on sensitivity IIRC ... 100 watts x 1 SH50 at 15 feet back from the speaker with no room interaction should be above 100 dbs to your ears ... how much headroom do you need? The SH50s are rated at 4 Ohms
cobrasound.com is local to you, and starlite.com is not too far if you want to buy new ... I am pretty sure all dealers just have the speakers shipped from the Danley facility in GA directly to your house though (it may not matter where you buy from) ... I have not found a dealer within 100 miles of where we are that has the SH50s to demo
The SM100 is what many use as a surround ...
I was thinking of going with these myself, but I still need to finish the basement: 88 special
all depends on your room I guess ... the directivity of these speakers is like nothing else I have ever experienced ... I have gone down the 3 SH50 path after modeling the coverage in my room design ... but to be honest, I only care about my seat
Guess I've got to get in the new home and get the basement finished asap so I can put this system together. I'm planning on going with an AT screen this time. Hopefully the speakers behind the screen will add another dimension to the experience.
The one dealer is recommending the sh69 due to the wider coverage pattern for the center speaker.
Like I mentioned in PM, plot your room and distance ... google sketch-up has an SH50 with the coverage pattern built in (you can download it for free) for reference if you want to design it that way (see photo below) ... also, you can use Danley's tool for patterns, but I found sketch-up much easier. The SH69 in my room would have interacted with the side walls more than necessary
Danley has a new speaker called the SBH20-LF that extends down to 40hz with its 2 additional bass drivers above and below the the horn exit. I'm trying to get more details on Facebook.
Hopefully there will be a video of some content going through some of their new lineup. Unless its just a booth that they displayed some products. I was thinking more of a huge convention center where they A/B some speakers. Maybe that was another event.
I'm putting together my HT list and have pretty much decided on 3 sh50's for LCR and sh100 for rear/surrounds. What amp are you guys using for the Danley setup? I've been suggested the Ashly Audio NX3.04 for LCR ($3850!!) and the NX8002 ($1400) for the rears.
Please tell me there is a more cost effective option as I don't want to spend $5200 on 2 amps!!!
In a home system with such efficient speakers, low noise from the DAC to the binding posts is far more important than big power. Consider fully balanced gear throughout. On the amp side, ATI makes good ones that are fairly priced.
I already have the XPA-5 but it was suggested to get more power for the speakers, especially the LCR. I have the 2 subs amps but need to find a way to power the sh50's and sh100's.
I'm also going to get a new pre/pro. I have an Onkyo PRSC886 but want to get something newer.
xpa-5 should be ok, but their fixed gain on the generation one units is 32dB and you might get a little buzz. The second gens they knock the gain down to 29dB which would help some. The D-sonics have similar to even lower gain on them so they will benefit you even more.
I have two QSC RMX amps right now ... got a 2450 used ($300) to power the L and R SH50s and had a 1450 that I am using for the C SH50
I modified the fans on both (about 5 minutes of work) and the amps seem to deliver more than enough
I am figuring that no one will ever need more than 2 watts sustained at 13-15 feet back with the 100 db sensitivity of these bad boys ... so how much headroom is required for dynamics and such?
All Danley designs can be made with built in amps.
