Budget - 3-4K max. New or used (audiogon).
Any recommendations based on the following specs

Max width where all 3 will sit horizontal. 48" long.
Sub TBD but I have my eyes on a very good deal (F113).
Usage will be primarily HT / everyday television dialogue.

DOES not have to be a single box encompassong LCR in one box.
Ideal can be 3 high quality monitors.
I don't have space to the left/right .
Thus all 3 will be sitting horizontal on my media console

Totally audio noob but I'm forgoing the whole surround concept of my bunk sounding YSP-510 in favor of better drivers for a better LCR frontend audio setup.

If I were in your situation, I would look at 3 Triad Silver/Gold MiniMonitors. Relatively low profile and terrific when used with a good sub which you already have.

Have not looked at the Triad, but sofar....looking at the Paradign CC-490 and may compromise with stereo (dual centers) due to the layout of the drivers.

How far away are you sitting? If much more than 4 feet away, I see no reason to have a center channel speaker.

Around 7-8 feet This is in a rec room.

I put a Yamah YSP-5100 on my console and just hated the sound output of it. Diaglouge is nowhere as nice as even 2 high end monitors....

So I decided to swap them out and redo the setup. My only issue is the 48" width horizontal setup.

Kal,

I plan on placing monitors arond my 52" TV. I will be sitting 12 ft away. Should I forgo a center channel and get only 2 fronts and a sub. I don't want surround speakers.

given all this I would suggest two quality bookshelves and your sub. lots of really nice small speakers for that budget. I agree with Kal on the center. If you do want a center just get three of the same bookshelf units.

I agree with Kal -- if you are just going to have the L/R speakers flanking the TV (e.g. about 4 feet apart), and you aren't even going to have surrounds, there is no point in a center channel. 12 feet away from speakers 4.5ft apart definitely fits this generalization.

The good news is that concentrating on a 2.1 setup will expand your effective budget considerably
