I currently own a pair of Audioengine A2 bookshelf speakers and the Audioengine S8 sub. I recently received a Panasonic VSX-820 as a gift and currently have the powered A2s connected via a line level converter. I get a constant hum/static noise from the speakers when there is no signal. Could this be due the the line level converter's unshielded cables? The A2s have an auto "idle setting" when there is no audio played.
So, should I invest more time and money trying to get rid of the hum or sell the A2s and get passive speakers? Assuming I can get ~$160 for the A2s, I'd be willing to spend an extra $100 bucks or so for a little more performance. However, if I can get rid of the hum completely, I'd be perfectly happy.
