Seems like a lot, full compass had them for 1200 a few months ago. Can't believe they stopped carrying them, I know the 3677 hasn't shown up on their site for a while but I called 2 weeks ago and got prices.

Have you completed your 7.1 setup of 3677?

Not yet. We close on the sale of our house next week and should begin building the new one in a few months. I'm currently planning on 6.3 all 3677, with one or two smaller speakers (8320?) in the ceiling for overheads. So I guess it'll be an 8.3. Planning on going atmos.

Just bought a pair of used JBL 8330a speakers for the ceiling (ATMOS) speakers for $200 shipped. They should be perfect for that location.

Would there be much difference using the jbl 3678 vs the 3677? Does it have better high freq driver?

It is supposed to have a better CD and the 2226 woof. Upgrade all around. I am not sure what that translate to in a HT seating, maybe larger sound stage, midbass punch, etc.

I'm not so sure about the woofer being an upgrade, the 2035hpl is used throughout the JBL cinema line even in speakers costing over 3k. It's a beast. and JBL parts list the 2035 costing a little more than the 2226. But yea I agree the horn and CD should be an upgrade, it's also bi-ampable which makes it THX certified in that setup If they cost the same I'd definitely pick the 3678, but they don't and the 3677 can be had for under $600.

From Audioheritage:
I just befriended a recently-retired JBL employee through some ebay auctions, and he said that the 2035H was something JBL developed as a cheap alternative to 2226's during the theatre-building craze of the '90's to compete with the likes of Peavey and others for a lower-priced JBL.

I have no idea if there are any audible differences in our small rooms though.

Yeah, It was a good find. However I'll probably use them on my patio now. I found a deal for 5 QSC 2150 speakers, New in boxes for $400 each, MSRP is around $1200 each. Couldn't pass them up, they are being delivered today. So now my theater will be all QSC with 5 of these (3 in baffle wall, 2 surrounds) monsters and some of QSC surrounds for atmos. It will be a while, but once installed I'll start a thread on how the compare the the 3677.

http://qsc.com/products/Loudspeakers...eries/SC-2150/

you may have seen clones of the 2150, however I talked to QSC lead installer who helped design them. He's gave me tons of advice and even wants pics of my install. The Clones are using a under-performing woofer with 2mm xmax, not even close to the long throw used in the OEM speaker, which also means they crossover isn't designed for the drivers they used. Haven't found anyone using the actual OEM speaker in HT, but I couldn't pass up the deal.

Who knows, An A/B test would be fun. the price difference on JBL part could be because the 2226 is so popular and they have a large supply. But the 2035 is used on very high end cinema speakers, so it's no slouch.

The 3678 costs as much as the 4722N which would be a hard decision.

That's nuts as the 4722n has dual 15s, larger cabinet, larger waveguide and larger CD, and a lower crossover which is a plus. Maybe they price it so high because it's THX certified when bi-amped???? Price being the same or close....I'd pick the 4722n over the 3678 any day.

Oh BTW, to keep things consistent the argument of the 4722N being superior to the 3678 with lesser woofer but dual, and bigger CD and waveguide can be used for the same comparison between the 3677 and the 3722N. Dual 15's rather than one, bigger, larger waveguide and I am not sure about CD but it does extend higher. Just saying.

And lastly, the 3677n vs the 3252n, which appears to have two lesser woofers, the same size CD, but a bigger waveguide, and also extends higher.

Well if anyone in NorCal wants to hear them just let me know. My system is far from complete, but you could evaluate the front's easily enough.

See a few posts prior, it stands for network which means the speaker becomes passive with a crossover. Without the network you have to drive each section separately with active DSP, which is a true bi amp configuration.

The qsc 2150s I just got have a switch have for bi amping. The mid high section stays passive as one assembly but can actively crossed to the woofers at 500hz.

Anyone think it would be worth it to go active? The mids to highs still stays passive either way.

It depends in which crossover you trust, the QSC or a digital active one in a processor. I would not spend money on more amps if you need to but if you have all the amps and DSP to do it as it won't hurt to try.

@MKtheater , @cdy2179 , @pdxrealtor

Since you guys have the 3677, what's your thought on this:
Pro Cinema Speakers, the X-Curve, and other Target Curves at Home

If I wanna remove the X-Curve characteristic, is it as simple as this (active bi-amp) ?:
1 - remove 3677 internal crossover network
2 - wire up the Crown XLS amp directly to the LF element (woofer) and HF element (compression driver)
3 - set the Crown to crossover (bi-amp) mode and set a HF crossover frequency. 1.2KHz ?
4 - Listen and enjoy ? Any bad effects? Any compensation if there's efficiency difference between the woofer and compression driver?
