hi,

here is the deal. i have won a couple of prizes over the past year from work parties and they have the option or returning them to best buy for an in-store credit. as of now i have about $1000 worth of credit. i am looking to build a home theater system and figured that i could use this to start. personally i am not a big fan of best buy, but this is almost free for me.

i have been looking at the B&W and Polk series. i would like the floor speakers with center, sub, and surrounds. i believe that i only need 5.1 (not 7.1 or 9.1). other possibilities are getting the receiver or others equipment from best buy and then getting the rest online or somewhere else.

this is not a dedicated media room, it is a living room/kitchen. the actual living room is about 19' * 17' with 8' ceilings. i am not looking to go "top of the line", but rather something to make my viewing pleasure. I like to listen to music while i am cleaning around the house. i also like to play games sometimes (rockband, need for speed, final fantasy, etc.)

as of this time i have nothing. i am using my PS3 and Mac Mini for media playback. the sound is coming from the two speakers in my Hitachi 65 rear projection tv.

thanks in advance for all the advice.

I have never been a big fan of polks but I read this review in Hometheatermag and they liked them alot. The B&W would probably be more expensive but alot of people like them. Just listen and see what you prefer. I have always thought they were overpriced myself. If you think the B&W are worth the extra money go for it. I personally think you would be fine with some bookshelves and a good subwoofer. I would use an ID company for the sub (SVS, ED, HSU).

In my opinion (and it's an opinion I know many others do share), *some* of the B&W's are excellent speakers and some not so much. The CM7 and CM9 (presumably the CM-line in general) sound very nice to me when paired with a sub. The 802 is an incredible speaker (again though, best paired with a sub). Some of the others (like the 6xx series) have been problematic.

I personally have never been a big Polk fan.

Care to share why you feel the 802 needs a sub?

Also, what do you mean by "problematic" in regards to the 600 series?

I would return the Polk PSW10 that subwoofer really isn't that good but the other speakers are great for the price

Have you considered using your BB gift card for your AVR? I think you can do better speaker wise on-line. These SVS 5.0 are very nice and have a sub available for 5.1.

I use a sub with my 3 802s because:
1. the best placement of the 802s for balance and imaging is rarely the best spot for bass
2. it becomes possible to carefully EQ the sub for optimal LF response in room.

Would it be OK to place that sub in a corner? How much room would I need between the wall and the back of the sub?

"Soon" is "now" at newegg and Amazon. They are also over $200 less. I checked, BB won't price match.

I guess it doesn't matter about price if the cards will essentially pay for it.

Yes that is ok placement and usually the go to spot for most people. I recommend the Subwoofer crawl though for finding the best subwoofer position.

Thanks. The rep I spoke with said that I'd want a front-porting sub since it was going to be in the corner of a relatively small room, very close to the wall.

Best Buy dropped Onkyo, you can't buy them there, they are never going to show up , the web team has never taken them off of the website

Well an 3-6inches away from the wall but i know plenty of people that put these rear ported subwoofers with maybe an inch from the wall. Personally I recommend doing the subwoofer crawl as I notice some people just placing there subwoofer in the corner and their was bass everywhere except the seating area

Might want to ask your question here:
