What is the ideal height for surround speakers? Ear height? Six feet? I'm trying to decide whether to hang them or use stands...
From my research a good rule of thumb is to have them at ear height while standing, and angled down to the listening position. I have mine slightly behind my listening position (about 110 degrees from main listening position) about six feet high and angled to my main seat. Having them at this height will help decentralize the sound while angling them down will still give the highs you would normally lose if the were not angled to the listening position. This is just my opinion so it is best to mess around with them and see what you like best.
Then what's the point of a stand that is only a few inches above the ears?
I my opinion they are a waste for surrounds and more meant for bookshelf speakers being used as your mains. Like I said, experiment and see what you like best but I had mine on 18" stands and thought they sounded much better when I removed the stand and put them on a shelf. JMHO
