lol thanks. I'm hoping the phils will blend well with the two SVS PB Pluses. I'm excited to hear the benchmark and bryston behind the phils.

Are you using the volume control in the benchmark? If so, is it attenuating the voltage or throwing away bits?

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence

Yes I'm using the volume control, but according to the techs I've talked to at benchmark nothing is lost. They claim using the volume control and bi-passing an outboard pre/amp is the best method.

Interesting. Thanks.

I've been debating picking one up and changing my preamp. Might get one and try direct to my amp rather than through the current preamp.

DM,

These will be for straight two channel correct?

Will you be going from source -> benchmark-> amp?

Which benchmark product do you have?

Looking forward to hear how your experience goes.

DM,

Thanks for the reply. I was just about to clarify my "two channel" question but you caught the HT part I did not include (I was just going to clarify that since you had mentioned subs earlier).

Are you going to do some measuring to see where the speakers will be crossed or go by ear? Thanks.

I don't have an external crossover so they will overlap somewhat. I have the subs crossed at 80hz for the low end kick.

I just thought he looked like you, or am I mistaken!!

Listening now to the monitor2s, they are superb, they are like towers in their bold clear sound. Or it could be the tube amp. Or it could just be the speakers or I just dunno except I love them!!!

Can't wait to get my center to complete the theater with the phil2s.

I must buy a bigger tube for the Phil2s and check it out!

Hehe - that's the thing about great speakers, they make you want to upgrade other things.

No, that's not me. Pics of me are floating around this forum somewhere, though.

Hmm...I am going to direct you to the manufacturer (Dennis) on that one. I would suspect you'll get more control over the bass woofer with Solid State, but YMMV.

Well these 2s and 3s are selling like hotcakes. Doesn't surprise me though as I warned Dennis he will need some help, guess that is why he has been quiet lately, I assume, unless he is vacationing in Hawaii!

Philharmonic Audio hasn't even started good, we don't have a forum yet, hopefully soon.

Just in case you are asking Dennis....I am retired!!!

Just can't say enough about them!

I'm looking at the spec sheet and I noticed:

Quote:

Output Impedance – Comes wired for 8 Ohms - 4 ohm and 16 ohm taps are available

Now given the Phil 2s' impedance graph:

I would imagine the 4 ohm tap will work best, but that also means some questionable behaviour below ~60hz where things are unlikely to go as planned. It's an extra $200 for that 4 ohm tap. Normally when amps need "taps" that usually means they have output impedance issues which is a sign of design issue. Such amps are best used with true resistive load tapered heavily stuffed transmission line speakers that manage to stay within +/- 1.5 ohms from 20hz to 20khz

Beyond that, the rated 20wpc probably means about 30-35w into 4 ohms if that, which is not a lot of power for a lowish sensitivity speaker like this (87.5dB/2.83v/1M). It puts the typical max SPL around 90db which is rather low. Now for more compressed music this is fine but for classical and anything with lots of percussion, they could sound flat and restrained as SPL demands are normally 5-6db louder in the midrange. I would personally like to have 100db capability out of my amp, whether or not I ever actually use it. For these speakers, to fulful that requirement you'd need around 300w @ 4 ohms (> 150wpc amp). A bit less is normally adequate, but even then you'd still need an amp that can do 150w @ 4 ohms (> 75wpc amp)

My advice is to bust out for something like this:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=245-502
and compare it to the tube amp. The results will guide your future direction. Do you prefer the sound of the speakers, or the sound of the tube?
