Dennis - thanks for these awesome speakers. I get about 2 hours a night to spend with audio/video and its really a pleasure.

I have settled in on 2.0 for most music and live music, 2.1 for Crystal Method, etc, full 7.1 for video.

I still get up and put my ear to the center channel when I have 2.x going - the soundstage is so perfectly setup in front of me I still think my center is accidentally running...I KNOW its not, but I still check it.

I have done the same for 2.0 - the bass response is so good I put my hand on the open port of the sub just to make sure its not running.

REW...most expensive freeware ever...

Twylight, If you are using the R972's internal amps, have they shutdown running the Phil's low impedance?

For those that are picking up these speakers and maybe interested in hearing some good voicing, possibly pick up the Robert Plant-Allison Krauss Raising Sand album. If you do, check out the song Polly Come Home. Plant has the stronger voice in that song but she comes in and out of the song and it almost has a ghostly sound when she comes in. That album may not be for everyone but is a great one. Just a thought.

I can't wait to hear many, many artists, even Hootie & the Blowfish, but this was a joke (see Philharmonica), pulling Dennis' leg after the snide Italian car comment

Seriously, I'm looking most forward to resurrecting my classical and jazz collections, which have taken a back seat the last few years due to inferior speakers. Classic rock, alternative and indie are what they are, but I'm expecting the greatest improvement and enjoyment of the former.

I've always been a fan of the BMW 2002 body style, and it was the first BMW I ever drove, starting a long love affair. But, because of my heritage and the fun factor I've adopted Alfa Romeos as a hobby. It's a better babe magnet than a BMW too

Well, at least we agree on colors. Helps hide the rust.

I'm a enthusiast as well. I have a mercedes and an audi, but I'd burn both of them if it was a choice between my stereo or my cars!

Guys

I beleive they are sort of in the same price range. Any ideas or inputs on the bowers and wilkins 683s compared to the wonderful Philharmonic-1?... may be I can add a HTM-61 center channel ? I hear center channel is good for movies . Btw , do you guys know if Dennis makes the center channels ?

I wont have any budget left over for a subwoofer after buying these 3 speakers (Philharmonic-1 or B&W 683) , so i will add it later on if i need it. I have a smaller room (14 x 28) so i 'may' be okay without a subwoofer to start with.

Any suggestions or inputs will me much appreciated .

-Thanks !

Well one speaker, by high fidelity standards, is awful, and the latter is world class within its SPL and extension limits.

If you want to ruin the experience...

Possibly, though i don't consider them vital.

I recommend you read this (reasonably short) thread from the beginning as many of your questions have already been answered. But yes, he does.

Not quite sure what having a smaller room and not needing (multiple) subwoofers have to do with each other, but yes you can live without a subwoofer, although the LFE channel in movies will be neutered and your frequency response will be determined by boundary interactions in the bass.

While I am purchasing the Philharmonic 2's 'blind' I have heard the B&W 683. I don't have the experience to call them awful but I didn't think they did service to my audition CD, so I would agree somewhat with EV's sentiment.

Dennis does make the center channel speaker. I think it would depend on whether your speakers are on the short or long wall whether it would be beneficial. I am going for a wider sound stage and somehow have convinced myself that a center channel speaker is necessary, but that's just me.

I think you're on the right track - focus your resources on front speakers and add to your system as budget allows.

All said, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, so I wish you luck
