Hi MKtheater.

I am in the process of soon acquiring a new HT setup.
I'd be spending roughly 2500usd on the speakers, 5 of them.
And I've been looking at the DR's for some time now.
Would the DR200/250 be usable in a room thats 13x13?
And I think about getting wedges as surrounds.

They belong either 1 or 2 depending on the listener, 3 out of 4 people liked the DR's for music and HT was not tried without a third U215. Based on what I liked about each I would assume that I prefer the DR's for HT but the U215's would score either 2 or 3. A shootout between the U215's and JBL cinema would be interesting for HT. I would like to get some 4722N's here with the Nano AVR EQing them and see how they do, They will either be 1 or 3! The highs and vocals are very close on the DR's and U215's so it will depend if the vocals on the JBL's are as good. From what I remember the JBL's may win the mid bass and sound stage criteria so who knows.

Sorry for the long delay!
They are positioned roughly 3ft above ear level on each side of the couch (a 3 seater).
Yea the room is 13x13x9ft, where there is a door taking up roughly 3,2ft on the left side where the front is.

I am using a TableTuba as sub with a FBQ2496

I am getting the itch again. I started reading about all my DR experiences from the past and some of the reasons I like Berries better are due to a zero hiss, and no EQ necessary. They sound smooth and clear. Now I remember the DRs sound ultra clear but with an edge but their dynamics and size of sound were incredible. I eq'd them with the Nanoavr and made atmos impossible which brings me to another point, I like all matching sound with atmos. So I am putting two DR-250s back in and going to compare them directly with the Behringer 215xl and this time I will EQ them within the Inuke amps I have and still be able to use atmos. If they win I will change over to all BFM once again and DSP will be simple with the Inukes(I am using them now anyways). I am heading over to the BFM website to get the EQ dsp settings to make these flat at 1 meter and let me room do its thing which I did not do with them prior. BTW, I am also rebuilding my rear subs and finally did but two RE XXX drivers and building two ported monsters. The front wall will contain 12 SI HTs ported to 10hz. LTD02 came up with a port design for all and will post pics.

Well, they happen to be the same ones I had before so nothing but hooking them up again. I used the Nanoavr last time and while it worked good it gave me no options and raised the noise floor.

So I changed my mine and ended up trying the RE XXX 18 ported in my front wall. I am starting with 2 at first and see if they could hang with my 8 SI in the same wall. I never cranked my 8 so I bet they will. I also built some BFM TLAH speakers and will add them to this list.

Well so far in stereo or music. I only have two so far. Once I get more built I can test my HT clips. This is in my room of course.

Interesting. I have a pair of SLA's from BFM that I built years ago and used them for front mains for a while. I remember thinking they sounded quite good and had nice imaging. Unfortunately, they can't perform at reference levels, so I am currently using them as my surrounds with DR200's for my mains in a 4.1 setup.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on TLAH's compared to the DR200's as far as dynamics and "big" sound, as well as soundstage/imaging. Please keep us posted as you progress with your never ending search for your ultimate sound system.

I am building SLA for Atmos so I can compare them. You have a big room? The TLAH is 99 dB sensitive so only needs 10 watts to reach reference in my room. I lose 3 dB to my front seats and the DR-200 needed to be tamed down to the same sensitivity to be flat. I like the soft domes a little better but the biggest difference is how the array plays smooth without dsp so far. My behringer system was my best because of all matching and adding Atmos which I could not do with the Dr-200. The DR-200 was better overall but the berry was just simple, cheap, and sound good. I should reorder the speakers since I rated the berry based on system and not per speaker. I had same midbass as the eD cinema 12, same smoothness as the pure 10, but played bigger than both. I would rate them under the DR-200 and DIY JBL. The DR-200 and DR-250 were very similar but slightly more midbass with the 250.

I always use a scale of 1 to whatever how many speakers to rate them against each other, not the best I have heard. Example is the I would rate the Berry a 1 in midbass compared to the pure 10 but does not mean it was the best in midbass, that goes to the 4675 and then U215.

I should reorder the line up, the berry comes in at 5/6. The TLAH reminds me of the DR combined with the 888lp or M&K 5000.

At this point I'm pretty much locked in with the DR200's. My wife would kill me if I started over with different speakers. I'm just curious more than anything. I Think I'm like many people on these forums, living out their HT dreams through you, MK.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but I just recently discovered I had mis-wired the tweeters on BOTH of my DR's.... Turns out They sound quite a bit better when all the tweeters are actually working. The last five years I had been feeling like there was something missing. All your descriptions of the amazing high end on the 200's, and I just couldn't seem to get that kind of performance out of them. I guess working tweets have an effect on the high end, eh?

I should have a Umik-1 and NanoAVR showing up today. I'm excited to really start fine tuning my very humble HT. It's going to be quite a learning curve for me. I'm hoping You might be kind enough to answer some of my questions and help me along if you have some spare time, since you are one of the few people that have had hands-on experience with the DR200's in a home theater environment.

Looking forward to your impressions on the TLAH's, sir.

The nanoavr makes the DR-200s sing! I am really into all matching speakers now so DR-200s would not fit, especially the ceiling LOL. Yes, that is the only problem with arrays is that sometimes it is hard to tell is a tweet is not working. When I compared the DIY JBL vs my DR-250 I think I favored the JBL but come to find out I had a couple of bad tweeters in my DR-250s so who knows. The TLAH is top or bottom ported so it has to out of the wall so I closed it and just made it a sub.

So I decided to have a little mini shootout with singles playing mono and all crossed to 80hz. I paired two against each other and the winner IMHO Moved to the next round. Here were the competitors:

1. CHT Sho-10
2. BEhringer 215xl
3. DIY JBL(2447/2352/2035
4. DR-250
5. TLAH
These were not blind and tested on 6 different people so far.

1. Detail/Clarity
2. Dynamics
3. Sound stage(big sound for cinema not precise imaging for music)
4. Mid bass
5. Smoothness or lack of fatigue

SHO-10. 215XL
1. 2. 1.
2. 2. 1.
3. 2. 1.
4. 2. 1.
5. 2. 1.
I thought the 215xl was clearly better

215xl. DR-250
1. 2. 1.
2. 2. 1.
3. 2. 1.
4. 1. 2.
5. 1. 2.
The DR-250 wins with its big, detailed dynamic sound.

DR-250. JBL
1. 1. 2.
2. 1. 2.
3. 2. 1.
4. 2. 1.
5. 2. 1.
Same results as a while ago, close but edge goes to JBL

JBL. TLAH
1. 2. 1.
2. 2. 1.
3. 2. 1.
4. 1. 2.
5. 2. 1.

TLAH is my new favorite speaker for my room hands down. It can play reference easily in my small room but can not play as loud over all as some others. It is a smoother sounding DR-250 in my room. I would think the small drivers in an array just mesh with my room the best. I really like the 215xl because of the easy setup without EQ and all matching system. I would take that over mix and matching better mains with weaker surrounds and atmos speakers as I did for over a year. Now the TLAH does the same thing but is a better speaker. Lots of work though and you have to love this hobby to do it. I will update first post.
