I currently have a 5.1 setup with a Yamaha receiver, 2 front Infinity RS-3 speakers, 2 back Infinity RS-3, and one center Infinity CC-3. Its all great but the receiver has died (center channel output won't work) and I am considering either replacing it with an Onkyo NR509 receiver or buying something more compact and getting rid of the 5.1 setup. I use the setup for watching TV, movies and listening to music. I would like to go as compact as possible as I live in an apt and the large speakers and wires all over look unsightly. I know that a small system may not sound as good but I am willing to compromise. The main thing I see myself missing is surround sound. Ideally I'd like just one unit, but if I do have surrounds would be great if they are small and/or wireless. Any suggestions welcome.

HSU HB-1 mk2 monitors as L/C/R - $129 each for satin black... on holiday sale.

http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/hb-1.html

Onkyo 609 - $380

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-NR609.../dp/B004O0TRD8

Yes, it's a bit more than $500, but the bang vs. buck quotient is huge.

Add a sub a bit later.

Don't discount surround sound... you're really missing out if you drop the surrounds. There are ways around your dilemma about cords. Use the Infinity's as surrounds until you can replace them with more HB-1's.

Posts some pics and we can see if there's something that can be done.

Already ordered the Onkyo NR509.

These speakers look great, but aren't they around the same size as my current Infinity RS-3s?

Take a look at the Infinity Primus line as well - specifically the P143 - P153 and P163. There are better prices to be found elsewhere. The 509 isn't much different than the 609 - it'll be fine for what you want.

Don't be fooled by those small Hsu speakers (to a point) - they sound pretty good.

When all else fails - RTFM!

I'm not a fan of the Polk Monitor line... they're cheap for a reason. The HSU's do push a pretty large wall of sound for their size.

Of note: If you ever do get to 7.1 surround... the 509 must be hooked to a separate stereo amplifier using its surround back pre-outs. The 609 has the amps built in.

No doubt. I would agree about the difference in quality. But $300 (Polk) vs almost $850 (HSU) for 5.0 shipped, there should be a difference

No arguments there! However, the OP did mention they were going for 3.0 for now.

I still think they can add surrounds later. It can be done even in an apartment.

You're right. The last sentence of his first post did say he would consider surrounds. I was just offering that as a cost effective method for getting them, too.

The HSU's would be my choice of the two, too
