As the title, looking to spend around $1k for both the speakers & amp total. Speakers will be very close to the (wooden) wall. I was looking at the Wharfedale 9.2's (front ported) & a Marantz PM series amp, but the 9.2's are proving to be hard to find in Australia (came up with this combo from some quick Googling).

To be honest I'm pretty new to the speaker scene, but I can talk headphones all day long. I don't mind buying second hand.

Anyone have any recommendations? These will be used in my bedroom, completely wooden walls & carpet floor if that helps.

Thanks, Jmatt

What about KEF? Q300 or the next model line up are both front ported.

The PSB Alpha B1 speakers would be a very good choice for about $300; rave reviews from everyone but the pope.

The PSB distributor in Austrailia is in Alexandria NSW, Audio Products Group (phone 61-02-9669-3477 to find a dealer), or go to their website and select WHERE TO BUY / AND PSB and your state; I found over 25 PSB dealers in NSW alone so you shouldn't have much trouble with that...lol.

For an amplifier that sounds good at under $1000, I would stick with Cambridge Audio. The 650A amplifier is MSRP $779 US, but is being discounted pretty heavily due to the new 651A coming out soon.

I also see that an outfit called "AV Australia" has the 550AB for sale for $559 AUS on their website. Also Carlton Audio Visual in Victoria has the 350, 550, and 650 for sale at similar prices (phone 03-9639-2737).

An alternative would be Marantz. www.marantz.com.au to find dealers by state, click on "WHERE TO BUY" down at the bottom of the list at left....

The Marantz PM6004 or PM7004 Integrated amplifier would of course be possible good choices (but I think Cambridge is better-sounding at the same price point).

Any amplifier with 40w/ch or more will be plenty for those PSB Alpha 1 speakers which are super-efficient (91db/watt).

Hey commsysman, thanks for the detailed reply. How would those B1's sound close to a wall? Do they need room to breathe?

You might also look at the Harman Kardon 3490, 120 watts per channel. It's a stereo receiver that has a built in DAC to take an optical input. Here's an Amazon link to see what people are saying. I would bet you can get HK in Australia. I have the HK 3390 (80 watts but no optical) and it's quite nice for the price. Another nice feature is the sub line out should you want to add one later.

I have no doubt that the Cambridge Audio 650A might be a little better in SQ, but when you consider those additional features and if you can get the 3490 for a price similar to what we can here, you can put your money toward better speakers.

Maybe take a look at some powered studio monitors(amp built into the speakers). For 1k, maybe look at JBL 4326p, Focal CMS 50 and the Dynaudio BM5A. Happy hunting.
