Okay, I caught the bug.

Purchased:

2 x Monitor 70's ($300)
2 x Monitor 30's ($80)
1 x CS2 (Center) ($100)

Just need a solid subwoofer. I'm guessing my old Sony SA-W2500 10" will be pretty much useless with the Monitor 70's? What would you suggest on a budget? The 10" 50 watt Polk PSW10 is $99 while the 12" 300 watt PSW505 is $169. That seems like a lot more oomph for $70 more? Will I sacrifice sound quality to go with that much more power in such an inexpensive box? Are they worth the upgrade over the sony?

Last question - would I have any reason to think the Yamaha RX-V596, which puts out 100W to 5 channels, wouldn't be sufficient to power the above?

Ignore the psw10 I would only pay $50 for one new it's that bad. The psw505 at $170 is an amazing deal and is way more that just $70 better than the psw10. If you can afford the psw505 get it. If you can't keep your Sony and save up for psw505

Polk isn't a second rate speaker company, people here paint it that way cause the are willing to spend on $1000 alone on subwoofer. At $200 the psw505 is still an amazing deal for the quality you get.

That receiver will have power needed for most applications

I wish I had seen the $169 PSW505 yesterday! I just ordered a BIC F12 sub for $188 from Amazon. The PSW505 is apparently discontinued by Polk, but all the reports say it is a good sub.

Okay, snagged the PSW505 just before it sold out! I'll give them a try on the current receiver. Picked up another old Yamaha receiver that does 100 watts through 6 channels.

So, $2100 worth of speakers for $650. Pretty good? I know that no one actually pays MSRP, but still feel like this was a solid deal. Agreed?

My plan is to use the Monitor 30's with one of the Receivers hooked up to my iMac workstation (where I work during the day at home), then when we're going to watch a movie, hook the Monitor 30's back up to the surround channels in the theater room.

Sound like a plan? Any additional thoughts or suggestions?

If you are going to switch the 30s back and forth between two receivers, order banana plugs so that you can quickly unplug the 30s from the speaker cable.

I got the open screw type - should that work?

yes, open screw will work. Anything will be easier than taking bare wire out of the terminals each time.
