Paradigm PS 1000

http://www.paradigm.com/products/arc...series/ps-1000

Mine is about 10 years old, but has not been used in at least 5 years. ( Put it away as I was afraid my kids would destroy it, and because it literally shook my room to the point where the ceiling tiles would move. )

It kicked butt THEN, but don't know how it stacks up against a new sub in the $500 range.

I hope to set it up real soon and see if it still works, but right now I don't have anything but the sub and rcvr for the new media room. ( Being build now ).

While it has trouble handling a piece of paper - it may still be OK
with a sub/sat system - There are more competitive subs out there
today, for a good price and a bigger woofer.

The sub is fair - however you have a large area to cover, the sub
is going to struggle in that room. That sub can only do so much -
and will not have a lot of tolerance, for heavy bass notes. Hook it
up, if you like it then keep it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The "media" part of the room is 35 x22. Ceiling height is 8" in canter of room... 3' wide, with a slope down on each side. The TV area will be using the right 2/3 of the room.

It is a media room, but none of us are audio / video philes.....

In the very back of the room a will have a dedicated dance floor area.... maybe 10' x 10' , with a DJ speaker, mirror ball, rope lights... and a mini dj setup.

It's still the same sub. If you still like it, use it. 22 Hz extension is not bad for that type of sub.

If you want an improvement over that sub, yes. The Outlaw Audio LFM-1 EX at $549 shipped will be a good step up from the Paradigm you have given the size of that room. It's the difference of a 10", 250 watt RMS 56lb sub vs a 12" 350 watt RMS 80lb sub. The bigger driver, more powerful amp, and bigger enclosure means a lot more output.

HSU rates their similarly spec'd VTF-1 (another 10", 250watt RMS, similar size) for mid-sized rooms up to 3,000 cubic feet (click on the loudness icon on that page), their larger, VTF-3 MK4 (comparable to the Outlaw EX) for huge rooms up to 6,000 cubic feet. This is a good guide.

I would try out the Paradigm right away (the EX sale ends 1/30). If you want more bass, then it's upgrade time And the EX is currently the best deal on a high output, 12" ported sub for $550 or less. And you might consider using the EX in your HT setup, and adding in the Paradigm near the dance floor to give a little more oomph in that area of the room.
