Hello. I'm looking for advice on a pair of speakers and a sub in the 800 dollar range. That's the most I'll spend, and I'll gladly take suggestions on components that come out a little less then the noted figure.

I recently have acquired a few pair of high-end headphones. These headphones really had me take a look at the quality of my home system, which consists of a jvc receiver and 4 bose bookshelf speakers and a center speaker. It didn't take long for me to realize I'd been fooled into believing bose was high quality stuff. The sound that comes out of the Bose is sometimes so disturbing that I have to turn it off. I'm currently at the point where I can't even listen to them anymore. The bass is ok... But the mids are muddy and veiled and the highs recessed. Instrument timbre is pretty pathetic as well.

Anyways... What'd I'm looking at is a set of speakers for around 250 to 300 a piece and the rest of the 800 will be spent on a sub. The room these will be set up in is rectangular and fairly large.

At this price point I'm hoping to get something that has good clarity and instrument separation. Since I'll be adding a sub, wouldn't it make sense to go with something that is good in the mid and treble frequencies and possibly lacking in (sub) bass? I've done some browsing but there is so many options, and without being able to hear anything prior to purchasing I find myself getting dizzy from all the options. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ben

I would check out newegg.com and look at the polk audio speakers there, you can get a pair off floorstanding speakers for $300

Thanks for the suggestion. Polk seems to be a good option for the money. Have you personally heard any of them? If so, which ones would you suggest? Polk's ebay store seems to have some pretty good deals. A pair of Rti8's are 400 with free shipping... But I can't seem to find much info on this particular model.

Yes, Bose is terrible. I can't believe that I not only listened to them for many years, but though they were high end as well!

Bose ain't crap. They are just severely over priced products ...understatement.

Anyways what do you on using your speakers for? Music mainly or ht? Sub wise I'm inclined to say go outlaw for their sale price right now lol

No subwoofer I've heard has been able to produce the bass I've experienced in the Corps!

Must..stop...buying...every bluray release...

I'll mainly be using them for music and movies. Mostly music though. As of now I'll be going with just a 2 speaker set-up. I'll slowly build around whatever I decide to get for my fronts. Or I may just get a 2 channel amplifier that has a good amount of power and stick with that, not real sure yet. What's this Sub you speak of??

The bose speakers I have were cheap in the first place... I think 100 a speaker? So I guess I can't comment on any of there higher priced stuff... But what I'm using now is very, very crappy to me ears. But again, I didn't fully realize this until I heard a good set of cans.

When you say music Id like to recommend the cambridge s30s. I used them shortly and really enjoyed them for music. Others can vouch. I eventually ended up going with energy rc-10s after trying hsu hb1 mk2s and the s30s. Love em for music and movies. Those are my opinions lol

Looking at the cambridges... They look fairly small. The room I'll be putting these in is pretty damn big. I see that polk has the tsi500 for 499 a pair (refurb) on their ebay site. I would prefer to spend at least 200 a speaker so that I don't get upgrade-itis too fast.

I'm not sure of the exact measurements ATM ... But big. More long then wide. If I had to guess I'd say 20 feet long minimum, probably more like 25. Maybe 8 - 10 feet wide, 10 feet tall.. I'll measure it when I get home. I'll definitely need something on the bigger side to fill most of the air.

That's going to be really tough with only $800. You should budget that just for your sub. You have a very large room.

Dumb enough to spend lots of cash on this junk!

Check out JBL 180 studio on buy.com
Full 5.0 speakers for $499
A real upgrade from Bose
For sub, check out BIC F-12 or Velodyne VX-11 for $180

There I just saved you $100
Spend those on some good cd/dvd/bluray

Damn... That seems like a very good deal. My only current issue with this is something is wrong my receiver where only 2 channels are working. So the extra 3 speakers will just sit around until I upgrade my receiver. I'd rather save that for last, and get the 2 speakers and sub first. I'll keep this in mind regardless as that seems like a helluva deal.

I'd love to have an 800 dollar sub, but I simply can't afford it. The 2 measly bose bookshelves have done a fair job I guess, so I'm not overly worried about it. I'm just going to have to work with whatever the options are within my budget, unfortunately.

Can anyone compare the Polk tsi500 to the JBL 180's? Any other ideas?

I had the previous Velodyne VX-10 model (supposedly about the same as the VX-11), and while it sounded OK for music at lower volumes, I found it had too much audible port chuffing at higher volumes. That might have just been me pushing it too hard. However, the Velodyne VX-11 has a manufacturer spec -3db point of 33hz, which is not very low for HT use. The BIC F12 would be a better choice for an HT system because of that and its bigger size (more volume output).

The JBL 180 towers can be had for $280 with coupon code at wwstereo. The tsi500's are nice, but I like the 180 sound better and they are a much better deal. I just picked them up myself and am very impressed.

When talking about speakers, size of the room does not matter as much as distance from the speakers. Even if the room was 100' long, if you're only sitting 5' from the speaker, it doesn't require much to get you to reference levels. Highs and mids do not really need to pressurize the room to make their presence felt. Subs on the other hand are highly room size dependent if they are not placed nearfield.

That being said, I would second the recommendations for the Infinity Primus (P36x floorstanders to be exact). They retail for something like $300 each, but can be had for much less if you look around and are patient. I got mine for $108 each from Fry's when they went on sale a few months ago. Polk has the Monitor70 that looks very similar to the Infinity specs wise, but I've heard they have a little more emphasis on the highs. They are currently $220 each with free shipping at NewEgg, but the black is an additional $70 off if you can live with it. You'll have to order today as that promo code will expire though. They also have the Martin Logan Motion 10 for $130 each using the promo code (regularly $400). I have not heard this model, but I've heard their higher end models and they are some of the best I've heard.

Martin Logan Motion 10

As a reference, I own a pair of Revel F52 and the Inifinities are right up there with them. Ok, maybe not that close, but MUCH closer to the Revels than most of the $2K - $3K speakers I auditioned. If I had to put a figure to it, they were perhaps 70% of the Revels at less than 1/30th the cost.

As for subs, the usual suspects are HSU and Epik. Can't lose with those at the budget you have. If you are handy with tools, you can probably do better for less if you DIY. This is when we will need to know about your room. You say it's about 2500 ft^3. That's not really that big if it's sealed. With the money you saved on the above speakers, a single Epik Empire or dual Legends should be plenty for that room. If it opens up to other areas that's when it gets a little dicey. I have a sealed 2300 ft^3 room and a single sealed 18" DIY sub is plenty for most peoples' tastes, but not mine .

This brings up another question. How loud do you listen to your music and or movies?

Ok, I just reread your post. I thought you said you were going to spend an additional $800 on a sub. I take back the Epik Empire or dual Legend suggestions and recommend a single Legend or the HSU VTF-2 MK4 to get you within your budget if you get the speakers above on sale or find the older Infinity P361/P362 on sale somewhere. They are the same as the newer P363 other than cosmetic changes.

With Polk TSI and Monitor towers selling for less than most half way decent bookshelfs it has to make you wonder. It does me at least.

Just about any real speaker will be an upgrade over the Bose you have but that doesn't mean that they're good.

IMO you'd be better off getting a good pair of bookshelf/monitors over super low end towers unless volume is your only criteria on which to judge.

The S30s mentioned would leave you about $600 for a sub. That combo would be WAY better than a pair or low end Polk towers and a cheap sub, especially for any music listening.

I have heard them long term and, while they are quite good, I like the Infinity Primus better. Not much to boast about in the looks department either. I do have to qualify that first statement though. It probably wasn't a fair comparison because the Pioneers were at my cousin's house which had the speakers near the wall corners with tile floors and just about the worst acoustic setup possible while the Infinity was in my house with carpeted floors and the speakers out at least 3' from any wall and is well treated.

Now that you mention it, I should bring the speakers over to my place to make a more fair assessment one of these days.

Thanks for all the responses fellas.

@duc135 - Do you recommend the monitor 70's over the tsi500's? The tsi 500's are normally more expensive, but refurbs are going for only 40 dollars more per speaker than the 70's. I'd assume the tsi500's are better but I have no idea. I'll look into the Infinity's as well. By the way, I'd guess we'd be sitting no further than 6 to 7 feet from the TV or speakers.

@kini62 - Good Point. If all a tower is going to offer over a bookshelf is a little more bass and volume, maybe I should be looking to bookshelves. Overall, the clarity/quality of sound the speakers produce is far more important than volume. I don't typically turn my music up to ear piercing levels.

@Jproy - Thanks for the link. I will check those out as well.

So, is the consensus that I should try to find a set of speakers on sale for 150-200 dollars a piece and put that remaining 400 to 500 dollars on a sub? That Martin Logan 10's are currently 299 for a pair on Newegg. That would leave me with 500 for a sub.

I appreciate all the help!

As of now I'm thinking of either...

A. Infinity Primus P252 (2) - 300.00
B. Martin Logan 10 (2) - 300.00
C. JBL 180 5 piece set - 500.00 *Would only leave me 300 dollars for a sub, and the 3 extra speakers would be useless until I can afford a new receiver. But sounds like a great deal considering their normal asking price.

Any suggestions on bookshelf speakers to throw in the mix?

I'd assume the tsi500's are better but I have no idea. I'll look into the Infinity's as well. By the way, I'd guess we'd be sitting no further than 6 to 7 feet from the TV or speakers.

Specs wise, they are very similar with the TSi going a couple Hz lower, but that would be a moot point as you will be crossing over to a sub anyway. Personally, I would go with the black Monitor70s if I couldn't find any Infinity Primuses on sale. They were actually my second choice to the Infinity when I was looking. If black doesn't work then I would go with the cherry Monitor70s. Not sure if you were comparing the price difference of the TSi vs the cherry or black Monitor70s.If it was to the black then I would go with the TSi as they would be cheaper than the cherry Monitor70s.

You can go with nicer bookshelves at the same cost (I don't know of any), but consider that, unless you have something to put them on already, the stands are an added cost of ~$100 or so for the pair. Bookshelves don't take up any less floor space than a floorstander either.

At 6' - 7' seating distance you won't need super efficient speakers. The more efficient the better, but it shouldn't weigh too heavily on your decisions.

Ok... as far as the Infinity's. Crutchfield has the p252's for 149.00 and the p362's for 199.00. Which is the better value? Keep in mind, If I were to get the p362's that's 100 dollars less for a sub.

I appreciate all the advice on the 5.1 systems... but as of now I'm just looking for 2 front speakers and a sub.

Need at least $200 for subwoofer.

$150 per speaker the Polk monitor 70's will walk over the p252's IMHO.

The outlaw subwoofer I recommend is $700 sub at $550 shipped amazing deal
