he he, yup they're not bad.

I'm in Toronto so if anyone knows a local reseller/distributor, I'd love to check them out. If I can get the prices you've quoted and I like the sound, it would be an easy decision.

For the curious ones, I checked out the Energy Bookshelfs vs. the surround ones
Energy Connoisseur Surround Bookshelf Speaker (CR-10)
Energy Connoisseur Bookshelf Speakers (CB-20)

I found the bookshelfs much cleaner sound with a greater range - sound was richer, especially the base. my only concern is the mounting.

Currently, I have the wiring set up for ceiling mount. Would you recommend a level shelf just below the ceiling or down firing mount?
I can always fish the wires to more of a wall mount - but I feel my wife wouldn't like it very much.

Recommendations?

Thanks.
Mark

I apologize if it's been mention before but with your sub budget, I would check these guys out. They are an authorized SVS dealer and even though the price includes duties and stuff, at least there's no surprises.

There are a few good retailer that ship anywhere in Canada and they have premium stuff. These guys, and also, these guys and these guys. Also, check out Axiom, they are based here and are an ID speaker company so you save the middle man.

An update:

Basement is almost done. They're painting this week. I am planning to mount the screen and projector sometime this week. Now, the speakers I seriously need to look into. It's the last thing remaining.

I am seriously considering them as well as the SVS package deal. My only qualm is with the HSUs, my surround options are somewhat limited as they recommended a distance of 21" from the wall for the HB-1MK2 if mounted ear level. As my mounting options are limited to ceiling on both mid and rear surrounds I would be hard pressed to mount these 21" away from the walls.

Now, the SVS speakers do not require such mounts.

Shipping is also way cheaper for the SVS.

What to do.....

Many people treat the front LCR speakers as a separate decision from the surrounds. Timbre matching is not so critical between the front 3 and the surrounds, so you don't have to worry about matching model lines or manufacturers.

I'd settle on the LCRs to meet your goals:type of material, number of people, loudness, how much acoustic treatment of walls / ceiling, etc.

Then pick the surrounds that are intended as on-wall or in-wall surrounds that meet your needs. Like bipolars, paintable. Or in-soffit-mounted speakers that you'll put in a column with speaker grill cloth...

Update:

Picked up SVS 7.1 set from a local distributor here. Who knew.... their Canadian distributor was literally less than 1 street block away from my office!!!!

I picked up the following:

1 x SCS-02 Centre Speaker Black
2 x SCS-02(M) - same speaker as above but wired for Left and Right channel
2 x SBS-02 Bookshelf Speaker Pair - Mid and read surround.
1 x PB12-NSD Powered Box Sub, 12" NSD Woofer / Black (PB12-NSD Black)

My wife saw the Sub box and she nearly had a heartattack. I am seriously scared of it myself.

hook up will probably take place next week or so... will keep you all posted.
