So first off, I'd like to say thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out.

The background: I live on the second floor of a two floor house turned apartment. The room I want the speakers in is no more than 12x11 and I'd be sitting about 6-7 feet away from the speakers. I've had some moderately audiophile quality headphones for ages now (ath-a900 -> hd650 + amp/dac setup) but I'd like a speaker set up.

I want to start off simple (and cheap, potentially the whole set up for $700): A pair of speakers, sub, and receiver. From what I've been reading the paradigm atom v6s seem like a great idea at $250 a pair. I would go for the v7's but they are $400 a pair and I haven't found a store that sells them close by.

What receiver and sub do you guys recommend? I've looked at some Pioneer and yamaha receivers but I'm not sure what I need to look for.

Perhaps sometime in the future I'll upgrade the system to 5.1, but nothing more than that.

The Outlaw Audio M8 is a good 8" sub that would match well with the Atoms for a small room. You an get a b-stock for $225 shipped (I have one of their b-stock subs; very slight cosmetic imperfection on the back). Here's a review at CNET, and here's an AVS member talking about using one with his Paradigm Studio 20s.

If you can swing it, for receivers look at the Denon 1612. People have mentioned getting it for around $300. But if you want to go cheaper, I like the HK 1600; good sound for music to me. And people often recommend the Onkyo TX-NR5009.

I really appreciate the recommendations. I looked at the m8 and it seems like just what I'm looking for!

I'm going to look into those receivers as well.

Also, is the difference between the atom v6 and v7s really worth the extra $150? I heard they had better highs

+1 to the Denon AVR_1612. I had a chance to play with one recently and it's a nice AVR.

For speakers, and given your budget of $700 for everything, I'd consider the gently-used market.

A pair of Paradigm Monitor 7 v3/v4 would be sweet (with v3s running at ~$400-$450 and v4s at ~$500 or less). Or, a pair of MiniMonitor v3/v4 (~$200-250) or Monitor 3 v3/v4 (~$250-$300) plus a new sub.

Later, you can add a CC-350, or CC-370v1/v2 for cheap ($200 or well under that), and a pair of MiniMonitors or Atoms for surrounds...and you're done.

The discounts on the older series Paradigms that are on closeout are always a such a good deal, it's hard to imagine you'd get $150 worth more for your money with the newer model.
