OK I got some audition time in today. I popped in BestBuy and I was surprised to find they had two very nice sound rooms and many varieties of speakers! I had the place to myself, I shut the doors and nobody bothered me. After I figured out how to use the system, off I went! I listed to B&W's 683's and 684's and I thought that they sounded very nice and I have to say that they were the best sounding in the room. I then listened to the Martin Logan electostats and I was not impressed at all! I am sure with proper tuning they might sound better, but they were just flat all around. These were the lower end models, there were another larger pair in the other room, but I was not interested in them so I did not bother. I then listened to the Motion 10's and 12's and I was no more impressed with them. I then listened to the B&W CM9's and they were very nice, the best I heard in the room! I was not able to get the CM8's up and running, so I missed out on them. I then took the Energy CF50's for a spin and I was surprised that they sounded pretty nice! I found the CF-70's in the other room, but the source was bad so I could not get a good sound out of them. One of the guys assisted me and we hooked up a iphone but the receiver was cutting out, so I could not get a source to really get a good listen. I then put the the Def Techs BP8060ST and the BP8040ST and I was impressed with them!! They sounded very good to me, especially the larger 8060ST. They really filled the room and had very rich bass and nice clear highs. I may have just bought them right there and went home, but the problem I found was that at lower volume the built in subs still seemed to be very over powering and also very muddy. I am sure there is more to them and they would need to be tweaked, but I am very interested in them and would like to find out more. I now have interest in the Goldenear Triton and would love to hear a pair of them. I really like the big sound of the Def techs! I also put on a pair of Mirage speakers and I am embarrassed for them! There were a few more I would have liked to listed to, but I could not figure out the source to get them up and running. Overall I liked the Definitives and I liked the B&W's.
