OK I got some audition time in today. I popped in BestBuy and I was surprised to find they had two very nice sound rooms and many varieties of speakers! I had the place to myself, I shut the doors and nobody bothered me. After I figured out how to use the system, off I went! I listed to B&W's 683's and 684's and I thought that they sounded very nice and I have to say that they were the best sounding in the room. I then listened to the Martin Logan electostats and I was not impressed at all! I am sure with proper tuning they might sound better, but they were just flat all around. These were the lower end models, there were another larger pair in the other room, but I was not interested in them so I did not bother. I then listened to the Motion 10's and 12's and I was no more impressed with them. I then listened to the B&W CM9's and they were very nice, the best I heard in the room! I was not able to get the CM8's up and running, so I missed out on them. I then took the Energy CF50's for a spin and I was surprised that they sounded pretty nice! I found the CF-70's in the other room, but the source was bad so I could not get a good sound out of them. One of the guys assisted me and we hooked up a iphone but the receiver was cutting out, so I could not get a source to really get a good listen. I then put the the Def Techs BP8060ST and the BP8040ST and I was impressed with them!! They sounded very good to me, especially the larger 8060ST. They really filled the room and had very rich bass and nice clear highs. I may have just bought them right there and went home, but the problem I found was that at lower volume the built in subs still seemed to be very over powering and also very muddy. I am sure there is more to them and they would need to be tweaked, but I am very interested in them and would like to find out more. I now have interest in the Goldenear Triton and would love to hear a pair of them. I really like the big sound of the Def techs! I also put on a pair of Mirage speakers and I am embarrassed for them! There were a few more I would have liked to listed to, but I could not figure out the source to get them up and running. Overall I liked the Definitives and I liked the B&W's.

How do you get the 15% off of those Lsi's? I also live in southern New Jersey and I'm looking for towers for about the same budget.

I don't know either. I'm waiting to hear something from the poster but no luck yet using PM.

Don't know whether it was something he got on the phone or some other discount from somewhere like Bing.

The Lsi15s are a 10 year old model but still an awesome buy at that price. The 25s are offered at an even bigger % discount from MSRP on that site but they're too much for my room so I'm strongly considering the 15s myself. For me they won't necessarily be an upgrade over what I have now (also 10 years old or so) ... but they will match my decor a little better in the cherry.

When I was out yesterday, I found a open box buy on a Denon 3312ci! I could not pass it up. This now opens up some other speakers considering that I can now add an amp.

Wonderful sounding pair of speakers. I have the swan T900's and love every bit about them, and given the reputation of the drivers in the DIY world, you're in for a treat. Very unique look too haha.

Give paul a call for an accurate price.

Those speakers look like something an Alien would own, lol. Wow, what a trip.

To the OP, if you decide to go with common brands, PSB would be the only one I'd recommend based on what you liked in your auditions. In addition they're way cheaper than the competition. Having said that, after being in this hobby for so long I'd now only buy ID speakers since they offer more performance for the same price. Either better drivers, cabinet, finish. or all out flat freq response... They're just 1 step ahead. Also whenever possible always get ribbon tweeters (not planar). No dome tweeter be it diamond or some other exotic metal can match the speed and realism.

The OP has made his purchase; I'll let him spill the beans, though.

The OP went 2 beans higher, than the bean count I was expecting.

I'm also guessing it was a case of Triton love, if he managed to hear them. Hell, the Threes would be enough for me.

Hmmmm? Golden Ear Triton Threes for $2K or Polk LSi15s under $1K on closeout? Decisions, decisions.

Ya think??

I'm pretty sure I have it narrowed down to one specific crossover designer, but the budget has been a bouncing ball so narrowing it down to a specific item is difficult (despite Jim Z's clue!). I do know that this thread carries a modicum of suspense!

This is correct. I am not sure why he's abandoned his thread, but yes, he purchased the Monitor Audio RX8's.

Obviously many us here weren't following those other threads and expected him as the OP to come back with something.

So $1750 or so, not too over budget. More money but hopefully more enjoyment in the long run.
