I auditioned some $700 Bose speakers at a Bose centre and kept on asking the guy if there was some kind of setup problem because it sounded so dodgy.

While I certainly don't often defend Bose, no one is putting a gun to the heads of the consumers.
1. Bose does a great job of marketing, in fact...what other company do you see with Ad in prime time TV. Everyone has heard of Bose, only audiophiles and a few others have heard of Definitive Technologies (insert your favorite speaker company)
2. Bose provides a product that about as is hassle free to set up as possible
3. If you have not heard a lot of decent audio speakers, it sound pretty good, compared to TV speakers and small ipod devices.

Set up #1: EMP e5ti, e5Ci, and SLS Q line Audio surrounds, EMP 10i10i sub
Set up #2: Def Tech SM450, CLR2002, SLS Qline surrounds and Klipsch 12wD sub
Set up #3: JBL130, JBL120C and Klipsch synergy sub

First time buyers always make costly judgement errors, and the women like it small. And the small size makes it a easy sell. One good thing about bose, you can just throw them in your sock draw, after you get real man size speakers, size does matter !!

If you don't know what you're listening for, Bose can sound pretty good.

If you know what your listening for, you can hear the holes in many Bose setups pretty easily.

Isn't #1 the whole problem?

When you buy Bose, a good chunk of what you paid is not for the equipment itself, its going right back to the marketing division that helped bolster Bose's image in the first place. When you buy from a lesser known manufacturer, you are only paying for the price of the equipment, and little if anything is going towards the company's propaganda.

Slight regional English usage variation? Here in Australia everything from shifty sales people to products of low quality can be described as "dodgy."

I hate walking into a store and Joe sales guy gives more options.jk

To stay within my price range and get best bang for the buck, he is recommending either PSB or Omage speakers. The first is a Canadian company. I have searched online and cant find much info on either company.

Sales guy also said that its not really important to match speaker for speaker (impedence, ohms, etc.) He said I could change that stuff on the receiver (Pioneer Elite VSX-50). Is he smoking crack or correct?

Anyone have experience with either speaker brand?

I'm going to suggest a slightly different setup.

Jamo C607 fronts - $750 to 800
Jamo C60 center - $200 to 250
Jamo C60 surround - $200 to 250
A good Hsu or SVS or Rhythmik or Outlaw sub - $500 to 650

Total: $1650 to 1950 (varies based on how well you can search for deals )

You can't really change that sort of thing on the AVR, but what it does is use room correction software to level match everything.
Anyone have experience with either speaker brand?

The AVR will use room correction software to level match everything.

You want to stay Timbre matched with your speakers. That's why I went with 3 towers across the front for a "seamless" front stage. I did have a horizontal at one time but sold that and purchased another tower. It did make a diffrence. Keep in mind the biggest reason centers are horizontal is because most people that's all they can do for space. I used a ceiling mount for my plasma so I could do,this. Horizontals are good just keep timbre matched with your left and right. Most dialogue comes out of center speaker. Also remember even in a B and M store the receiver may have Audyssey Eq but it probably hasn't been run or set up properly. Maybe in the higher end stores it has been in there enclosed HT Room.

Level match everything it will. Timbre match everything it cannot. In other words, the salesman was somewhat wrong. Then again, depending on content he was right. If you mostly do movies, its not essential to timbre match. Most of the time different content is coming out of different speakers, so no biggie. However if you do music, you want everything to match tonally, so its more essential to match at least the same brand and speaker line, if not all the same speaker model.

Around these parts people just suggest staying with the same brand and line to avoid any issues down the road.

Hmmm, his initials would also be an acronym fro Big F'ing Joke of a Singer. :-). He is a better analogy to Bose then the Camary was though. Bose, a box that make sound with a loyal following and a lot of hype, but not a great speaker. The Boss, an entertainer with a loyal following and a lot of hype, but not a great singer.

I know some people are trying to be objective about Bose, and I respect that. But honestly, Bose is absolute GARBAGE. For 2k, you could get the Klipsch Rb-51 system and a really nice Internet direct sub that would just demolish the Bose system is EVERY way.

A true classic, and definitely not off topic in a Bose thread smile.gif.
