I already have a set of powered speakers (Audio Engine A5's). They sound great for my purposes. I also have an Onkyo 509 receiver that has no preamp outputs. The system is not for surround sound. It is a purely 2 speaker setup. I would like to use the speakers with the 509 receiver. I figure all will work well if I permanently connect the headphone out jack to the speakers. This will allow me to have remote volume control, too. I am setting it up this way because I am assuming connecting the R/L speaker outputs on the receiver to the powered speaker inputs (even at the lowest volume setting) won't work. Do folks agree that I should use the headphone out, or is there a better way to make the powered speakers work with the receiver? Thanks for your thoughts.

You can buy/build speaker-to-line level adapters for this. They will permit you to connect your powered speakers to the amp outputs and be handled like any regular speakers with all AVR features/controls.

It probably has tape outs, which are line level.

Tape outs are of fixed gain and convey only analog sources so I doubt it would be a solution for him.

I will be using the hdmi inputs so the tape line outs won't work.

So if I use a line level adapter I will still have some manner of volume control, Kal?

Yup. Everything that the AVR can do with regular speakers is possible, including Audyssey. The only theoretical limitation is that the signal is going through the power amps of the AVR as well as those in the speakers. No way around that with your current equipment.

Beautiful. I have a Russound speaker level to line level output on hand and will use it. Thanks for the advice.
