Paper cones can deteriorate over time but I have not had any failures.

Oldest speaker that I still user are:

KLH Model 33's 1971 used as wholehouse audio in master bath.

JBL 100's 1973 used in guest bedroom with Marantz 250/3300.

Klipsch Cornwalls 1975 used in spare bedroom/listening room.

Klipsch Heresey's late 1975 used as center channels for JBL/Cornwalls.

I had my pair of Paradigm 7se speakers for ~20 years and I only upgraded to Monitor 7v4s when I A/B'd the two speakers back-to-back and realized how much more open and more "forward" the M7s sounded. I still liked the warmth of the 7se's (which I now get from the 5se MkII speakers I have in my home office), but for HT the M7s were the better speaker.

My oldest pair are JBL L36 bought in 1977. I had them reconed about 20 years ago. They get cobwebs every now and then but easily taken care of with some good ol rock n roll.

And then I found this site and somebody told me that JBL sells their refurns on Ebay. Over two years or so I put all refurbed Studio series in the family room.

Alas, but did you buy them new? Anybody can buy something old....but did you earn them?

I've got some LaScalas bought new in 1979 and some EV's I bought new in 1978.

LaScalas still going strong with original drivers (new crossovers), EV's not going strong with the rotted foam

Is this sort of like "new money" or the folks that buy modern Harleys because they look like old bikes?

I should have then been clearer, I bought into my old speakers. Didn't earn it.

It would be pretty extraordinary if I bought them new and even more extraordinary if I bought them new and could still actually hear them.

I don't think Altec sold any 1003 horns for private use. Even billionaire eccentric Howard Hughes had more sense than that . He used Altec Valencia A7's in his private theater in Vegas.

I just noticed that the foam surrounds on the woofers of my ~20 year old Acoustic Research bookshelf speakers are on their way out. I have some new Polks on the way.

I'll probably try to repair the AR speakers and use them in the garage.

I upgraded my speakers during November through March, so my speakers are all under 4 months old.
