I'll be using the Pioneer VSX-1021K to drive these.

I was looking at the EMP sale and discovered I would be spending $1200 for E55Ti, E56Ci, and E5Bi. I love the look but am a bit concerned by the 6 Ohms and 88dB sensitivity. I have never heard these speakers but have enjoyed learning about them over the last few weeks and it sounds like they are well built and well liked. I like the free shipping with free return in case I'm not fond of them. Those towers are just stunning.

I can get an Ascend set with stands for $1395 which includes the CMT-340 front/center and CBM-170 surrounds. I have heard these speakers and they sound very nice. I am surprised they are more or less in the same price range as the EMP. They are ugly, but WAF is not an issue. I like the stands, because I like the tower look they create and I'd have to put them on something...

My room is on the small side, probably about 13x11 or so (it's acutally a bedroom converted into man cave). I've got an Acoustech H100 sub I'm currently using although I am looking to upgrade once I get a new set of speakers. I have no idea how either of these will sound in my room, but my line of thought is either I try the EMP and don't like them and send them back and get the Ascends or I buy the Ascends without ever trying the EMPs. Buying both for a comparison is NOT an option. Besides, I don't want to have to pay return shipping if I don't like the Ascends.

So, thoughts? It seems as though I may only have one option.

I have a 5.1 system consisting of 170s front, 340 Center and HTM-200 surrounds. I have an SVS PC12-NSD sub. These Ascends are the classics that I bought 9 years ago. I have yet to be disappointed. If I were buying a sub today, I would match the speakers with a Rythmic sub. My room is slightly larger than yours (17x13).

I vote for the Ascends. That was the exact setup I was looking at purchasing if I had not gotten a local deal on some Paradigm monitors. After owning Jamos for years that were 6 ohm 88-90 db speakers, I have found that I really like the higher efficiency more dynamic sound. (excluding horns). Just my personal preference.

I wouldn't even bother with the Empteks.

I have Ascend Sierra-1's for my L/C/R and HTM-200s for surrounds, all driven by an Onkyo HT-RC180 (similar to Onkyo TX-SR807) and I have no problem getting my speakers very loud... to what I would call uncomfortable volume in a room that is basically open to my first floor common areas (approximately 7500 cubic feet) though I'm about 8-9 feet from the fronts and 5-6 feet from the surrounds when sitting in front of my system.

When I throw parties and I crank up the music really loud, I don't notice any clipping and my friends beg for me to turn it down.

Not bothering with the Empteks because you didn't like Jamo's?

The Empteks do have a 30 day return policy where they will pay for the return shipping.

I love my e55ti's, but I have never heard the Ascend CMT340's. The e55ti's are very large and the can play very loud. With the pioner vsx 1121, you will a ton of power and they should sound great.

I went with the same emp epeakers you are looking at but went all b stock for a total of $747.50. I was also looking at the brand you mentioned, but due to the price and reviews I found I pulled the plug on the emps.

I am torn with your decision. Part of me says you know what the ascends sound like and you enjoy them so get them. The other part says but who knows what you are missing by not trying the emp's.

If I was in your shoes I would probably buy the emp towers alone and try them for a few weeks. If you do not like them then sending back a set of towers would be much easier than sending back 5 speakers. Chances are once you see and hear them you will not be sending them back anyway.

yeah I agree with Slammin86. I just got my EMP Tek E55ti speakers and was floored on how good they looked and sounded, there is also a March sale going on so it might be worth a shot to listen to them for a week or so and see if you like them. but I've listen to speakers quite a bit more that don't sound as good as these .

EMP tek 5.1 theater setup, Marantz SR6006, Oppo BDP-95
Salk Songtowers, Emotiva XPA-2, ERC-1.

This is a horrible hobby!!  My wallet hates me, takes up to much space, neighbors want me to move, but man my house sounds amazing!

My point was that I have developed a preference for speakers that are more efficient and "forward". I didn't mean to imply the EMPs were like the Jamos. Just that if my memory is correct they were similar spec wise. The OP had heard Ascends and liked them. Just saying that the Ascends were different than the EMPs. Hope I didn't cause any confusion.

In spite of the little voice in my head telling me I should go with the Ascends I went with the EMPs; E55Ti, E56Ci, and E55Wi. I'm thinking the Ascends, in my room, may be a little harsh. I realize I probably need some room treatments, but I'll get to that down the road. Right now, I just really like the look of the EMPs and as long as they are comparable to what I've heard from Ascend; I'll be more than happy. I'm just a sucker for a tower speaker, I guess. Probably too much speaker for my room, but I'm have Athena F2s so I'm used to having too much speaker! If I'm the least bit disappointed with them over my current full Athena set up, I'll just send them back and probably won't bother upgrading at all.

Thanks everyone for the insight. When I get them, I'll post pics in the EMP thread with a little personal review.
