Hi

I think it'll be interesting to have a thread about this!

So, what myths/general things about audio tick you off?

Ok I'll play...

"surrounds don't matter since they don't get much use"

Sure this is place you can save some money but in IMHO there is nothing like having large capable speakes as surrounds if you can afford them and have the room.

I have a similar one: People think their speakers are continuously getting that "100" watts at all times.

Many think that Bose is serious audiophile gear. Or that exotic cables and wires make an audible difference.

Dumb enough to spend lots of cash on this junk!

I love how Bose has stores like Best Buy and Frys Electronics hang the speakers above your head at the display. I also throughly enjoy the little demo they have with the woman telling you how good her voice sounds! -.-

By the way, long time flying_fool! How's life treating you these days?

The entire audio review industry. It seems like home audio is the only market with this bogus "expert" segment. The golden eared voodoo magic reviewers somehow have these jobs with no technical background, or ability to pick a product apart. Every speaker is as good as speakers costing twice as much, but not as good as the expensive speakers they previously reviewed. It's even worse when places like stereophile have measurements, yet the reviewer doesn't even base any of the commentary about what he's hearing on the measurements, and even makes observations that are opposite of what the measurements show.

People who spend $400 on a pair of tower speakers (recent Emptek B stock sale comes to mind) then recommends that everyone needs to buy an AVR with pre-outs so that they can put a 200 WPC amp on these speakers to make they "really sing". Seriously? You are going to spend $400 on a pair of speakers then spend $1800 on an AVR/amp combo to drive them? And then they go on telling people that the difference is night and day from when they added an amp. Totally bass ackwards IMO.

Keep in mind that with the Emptek speakers being half off they are now comparable to speakers costing 4x as much.

I agree with jay as I have read reviews that state these speakers sound like speakers that cost serveral times more, except I have read that about too many speakers or brands that its not believable.
When the reviewer says the con of a subwoofer is that its to heavy and has no remote.
When a best buy employee tells me that a percision acoustics subwoofer has the same build quality and sound as paradigm. The employee did not realize that I have 2 sub 12's at home.
When so many speaker reviews are glowing and nothing to compare it to.

HAHA!!!! I KNOW!!!!!! That thread drove me nuts!!!! People were spending a couple grand on the receiver and amps!!!!!

The thing that drives me nuts the most is when people say that speakers sound like they cost 3 times as much.....then when you ask them what they compared them to and they say speakers at the same price point.....or not at all!!

Yeah the "speakers sound better than other speakers costing 3-10x as much" is very annoying. With so many discounts on speakers nowadays you can always find something comparable in a similar price range.

And its really annoying when the reviewer says that about HTIB speakers or even satellite speakers.

"My 300 dollar samsung home theater system has 2000 watts!"

"I want a crazy kick ass home theater system! Oh my budget? 75 bucks"

"Bose is the best, PERIOD!"

"How many watts does it have?"

"My samsung home theater system has more watts then your $5000 home theater system so its louder"

The list goes on and on.....
