I really need some help concerning speakers. Firstly, there are exactly 2 places in a 20 mile radius for me to audition speakers so that limits my choices. I've listened to B&W 684's and CM5's, and Paradigm Monitor 7's, Mini's & Atoms. The salesperson said the Paradigm 7's weren't broken in yet and they would smooth out after break in. To my ears the high end sounded too harsh. The B&W's were ok but I wasn't really in love with them. I wasn't in love with any of the speakers I listened to. I might have liked something more in between the 2. I'm also looking at bookshelves. I had a pair of Focal car speakers 5 years ago and loved them. I've never heard their non-auto speakers and nobody around here has them for me to listen to, the 706 or 806 or 714 or 716. I'm also interested in the BA VS or RS series bookshelves or towers, but again, nowhere for me to listen to them. I don't want to spend more than 3500.00 at the absolute most for the entire 5.1 speaker setup because I still need to buy a receiver. No amp for me so the receiver not only has to pair well with the speakers, but it has to have enough power to drive them. Perhaps something like the Integra 70.3 / Onkyo 3009 if it pairs well with whatever brands you guys recommend.
Priority is sound quality, music separation, looks. This will be for about 60% home theater / 40% music. My preference leans more toward mids and highs than it does bass, but that doesn't mean I want them to sound like nails on a chalkboard. Any suggestions, experiences, anything that would help would be greatly appreciated. By the way I live in Cherry Hill, NJ so if anyone knows of places I can go, feel free to suggest (I've already been to Hi Fi Sales and in my price range is the B&W's and Paradigm's I already mentioned).
Thanks for your help.
