Fellas, just like the title says I'm hoping to get some advice for surround speakers. One side of my living room is kinda tricky to deal with so I've attached some pics to show the back left corner(the right side is basically just plain bare wall). The main listening spot is just ahead of the very edge of the fireplace. So placing the surround speaker there(as the dolby setup guide suggests) would look pretty silly. I assume the area above my built-in cabinet would be a very poor choice for a surround speaker as well but if this isn't true please correct me. So is the back wall on an adjustable mount the only option?

I suppose location may dictate surround speaker type as well. If I could place the speakers directly to the sides of the listening spot I'd have a fair a bit of choice(direct radiating, bipole, dipole), but if on the back wall is direct radiating the only feasible choice? Any and all help is appreciated.

I'm slightly confused. Based on the direction of that chair it seems that the cabinet is on the rear wall. That would make the location more-or-less directly above the outlet on the side wall the best place for a surround. I don't see any acoustic reason for not putting it there. It's a little hard to tell how that would look. Is appearance the reason you are not considering above the socket?

I'm sorry for the confusion, and now I can definitely see my mistake. The chair slightly shown is not facing the tv. It's an old pic I had to just show the back and side of my current location. The display is on the opposite wall of the curtains seen in the first pic I posted. So the cabinet is on the left side wall.

Directly to the side of the listening spot would be at the edge of the fireplace and I'd rather not mount anything there for aesthetic reasons. I'm thinking that the area above the socket is actually the only choice since that recessed area above the cabinet seems like a poor spot for any speaker. Only thing is that is the back wall and I've always read that is a poor choice for side surrounds. It may be the only choice but that's why I wanted to get opinions in case there's something I'd not thought of. Thanks for taking the time post in spite of the confusion I caused.
