Hi.

I'm going to start a HT system with

Onkyo TX-NR818 (when available)

I will be playing movies, TV and quite a few networked hi-res flac files via my Squeezebox Touch.

What would be the best low-end 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system at 2000 USD or less?

Thanks. You guys are great!

Jim

For a sub, Outlaw Audio just put there LFM-1 Plus on sale for $499 with free shipping through April 30. That's a very good deal that would leave you $1500 for speakers.

For the speakers, you might look at the Energy RC or Veritas lines at Vanns.com. Or the Ascend Acoustics CMT-340 SE series.

Definitive Tech Mythos Gem X4= 1110. Mythos 7 Center Channel = 400 and D Tech ProSub 1000= 500. Total of $2010. Great Setup to start in my opinion. It would also be good to look at the martin logan motion 4's and motion 8 for a center and their dynamo 500. Both would sound incredible.

Dual Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Pluses @ $998 delivered.

BIC Acoustech 7.0 PL-89 X 2, PL-28 X 1, PL-66 X 4 approx $1,000 delivered.

BTW exact setup I have with an Onkyo 808 and absolutely love it. Very hard to beat for the price.

For HT usage, that Def Tech sub will be anemic compared to the Outlaw Audio Plus. Def Tech is notorious for over zealously stating frequency response performance specs. That, and it won't have the SPL (volume output).

Most major mainstream speaker brand subs are grossly overpriced at anywhere near MSRP. The best bang for the buck subs are Internet direct retailers such as Outlaw Audio, HSU, SVS, Rythmik, and Epik, and they typically are better performers than mainstream speaker brand subs that are even 50% off retail. Research in the AVS subwoofer forum if you want to learn more.

Those Q300's are supposed to be awesome.

I also got the email today about the Outlaw plus sale. I wish it was the EX! I am debating about getting one and pairing it with my EX.

All it took was one pair of Carnival speakers - now look at where
you are at!

Like cel4145's suggestions. The Ascend look very promising, looking at replacing my surrounds with the CBM-170SE's myself!

I'm just about to pull the trigger after getting a rec from another "Jim Z" in Texas besides me.

Any other alternatives I should be considering?

Thanks.

Seems like a very good setup to me

Once you get the Plus, if you need help integrating it with your system, come by the AVS Outlaw owners thread.

Newegg has a special:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882156011

KEF Classic Q Series iQ70 Floorstanding Speaker (Black Ash) Each for 279.99 USD.

Would this be an alternative to the KEF Q300s?

I pulled the trigger yesterday when I heard the 818 was on the way to me.

What accessories such as speaker stands or wires (type, guage, etc.) should I have on hand to set this system up?

And, thanks for the all the help. I'm getting real close to having my first HT.

The stands would be your choice, the drivers should be near your
head level when you sit down. Amazon has some stands.

A lot of people buy their wire and plugs from MonoPrice, their banana
plugs tend to be a mix bag. You can also go to places like RadioShack,
Walmart and Home Depot.
Do not get caught up in the fancy speaker wire game - regular speaker
wire is fine. You just need the proper guage to cover the distance. I still
use 14/awg for all my hook-ups.

Look at this set-up guide

I would like to plan ahead.

Can you give more detail about what kind of interconnects I'll need and how many for these speakers and the receiver?

Center channel: 4 plugs?
Each side speaker: 4 plugs?
Each satellite: 4 plugs?

Or is it half that many?

And how do the speakers perch on top of thes stands? Are they screwed in or secured in some other fashion?

The elephant in the room is what about all the wires trailing all over, particularly for the satellites. I have bare floors without any carpeting.

Is there some magic I can use to hide these wires?

Thanks.

Hi.

I wanted to thank everyone that helped out with suggestions.

I finally got everything assembled today and performed the Audyssey setup. I fumbled a bit on setting up the 5.1 speakers with back surrounds instead of just surrounds at first, and I didn't get the surround connectors right at first. The surrounds are KEF iQ10s, and there are included "crossover" cables to connect the upper and lower poles of the speakers, but I didn't connect them until I got an Audyssey error because they sounded like ca-ca.

I still need speaker stands, and likely will need a new TV stand/equipment cabinet.

The HT sounds great to me, very clear and accurate; of course, I don't really have a reference to compare it to smile.gif

The first movie viewing will be Inception or Black Swan tonight.

Thanks again. This forum is consistently great.
