Im looking to buy some good speakers for my apartment. Mostly for listening to music, but also TV, movies, and gaming. Im mostly looking for clear, crisp sound but also of course want them to be loud and good base. Im currently looking on Craigslist because Im trying to keep the cost down. Any suggestions?
Would any of these be worth it? Also any ideas on receivers?

So are you in the Denver area? if so I might be able to help you hone in with some speakers to buy, also about how big is your apartment where all this will sit at and your budget you want to spend?

EMP tek 5.1 theater setup, Marantz SR6006, Oppo BDP-95
Salk Songtowers, Emotiva XPA-2, ERC-1.

This is a horrible hobby!!  My wallet hates me, takes up to much space, neighbors want me to move, but man my house sounds amazing!

I would take the IL 30 infinity over all those, you can't lose with providing that they're in great working order.

Apartment is 1214 sq. ft. Not sure of the living room area (where the speakers would go) dimensions. Maybe something like 12x12. Price range ~$150

So would I. Great sounding speakers and the price is right. I owned a pair for a few years. A nephew has them now - thrashes them daily with no apparent ill effects. Get them placed right and you won't need a sub.

When all else fails - RTFM!

Another vote for the Infinity's. Never heard of PurTone, although I'm apparently local to them.

Ever heard of 'white van' speakers? Not saying they are but it does sound like it. And a wattage rating in PMPO? So damned awesome sounding - and only $50?

Go check out those Infinity IL30s if you like decent sound.

Alright thanks for all the replies, so everyone agrees go with the Infinity IL30's?

Any ideas on a good receiver for these speakers plus a possible sub in the future? Nothing too expensive please.

BTW, were you looking for a stereo setup or eventually going to a full surround sound system?

Those Denons are pretty old. Look for something a little newer.

Also, these would be an excellent apartment 5.1 setup http://denver.craigslist.org/ele/2988451360.html

Idk surround sound would be nice but if the speakers alone are louder and cheaper then they would be fine. That setup however looks pretty good, how does it compare to the two Infinity IL30 tower speakers?

I think they're based on the Infinty Primus series which is probably a step down from the IL's but it's a full 5.1 package for a decent price. Towers generally play louder than small bookshelves but being in an apartment can you really crank it up that high? And filling out the rest of the IL speakers would take some time and some more money not to mention buying a sub as well.

How much are you looking to spend? Perhaps you can get something refurbish, at an internet store like Accessories4Less, or go to ShopOnkyoUSA.

And what source components do you have or expect to get in the near future? If you have (or get) a Bluray player then a receiver that's hdmi 1.3 is the better choice, but more expensive. It would also allow it to be used as an hdmi video switcher which just makes things much easier. If you have a standard dvd player then an older 5.1 receiver would work just as well for audio but you would have to change the input on the display or buy a bunch of component video cables (which are dirt cheap now but make a mess of the wiring).

And yes, I realize a newer receiver would most likely have a better room correction feature but it looks like he's really trying to keep the price low. I didn't see much on CL in his area (Denver?).

There's an old H/K avr 110 but it might not produce the volume he's looking for. ($75) http://denver.craigslist.org/ele/2924441902.html

Here's an older refurbished Yamaha 5650 for $113 shipped with a 90 day warranty http://www.overstock.com/Electronics...9/product.html

An Onkyo RC160 but the hdmi-out is bad ($100). Still might be a good choice. Knock another $10-$15 off. Doesn't hurt to ask. http://denver.craigslist.org/ele/2989188551.html

Well I don't have a blu ray player, but I would be playing my PS3/xbox/wii and maybe just an HD DVD player.

I'd really like to see you get a receiver with hdmi 1.3 for the lossless audio on BR and HDD discs but I'm not sure your budget (which you still haven't confirmed) will be enough, even for a used one. Something like that Onkyo RC 160 I linked to would work for the audio but you never know what else might go wrong with it as soon as you hand over the money. But buying used can be a big risk. However, I buy most of my stuff used, but only if it's in prestine condition.

If you really want to keep the price down then look for a good used receiver that's not more than 7-8 years old (it may or may not have room correction) for around $75. Anything older than that might not have the basic features like bass management or will be a higher end model and out of your price range. The Denon 1400 and 3200 you linked to earlier don't have enough digital inputs for all your sources. If your patient you might stumble accross something on CL that will work for you.

Otherwise, Dakmart.com has an old Denon 685 refurb for $99. AC4L.com has Onkyo refurbs starting at $125.

The current set-up I'm contemplating is the Denon AVR-1312 receiver ($140 Amazon), paired Sony SS-B1000 bookshelves ($60 Amazon). Then because I want to play my music wirelessly from my laptop, an Audioengine W3 wireless adapter ($150) to hook up to my Denon. Basic layout of my apt in my thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1409042

Anyways this is interesting to see the progression seeing as we're in similar shoes regarding budget, slightly different audio needs though
