Helping a friend out and steering him away from a HTIB. He started off with a $300 total budget. Now purchased a Onkyo 709 and has $300 for 5.1 setup.
This is for a small room - gaming/movies only.

Some budget systems he's looking at in the sub $300 range:

Boston Acoustics Horizon MCS100 5.1 - 219.99 (A4l)
Polk Audio RM705 5.1 - 249.99 (Amzn)
Klipsch HD 500 Compact 5.1 Home - 299.99 (Amzn)

I know it's well below the standards of most, but do any of you have input on the following 3, or any legit recommendations in the sub $300 price range?

The goal is to buy better speakers in the future and retain the receiver.

Rather than buying a cheap 5.1 throw away system, I would suggest spending the $300 on a decent stereo pair, then add center channel, sub and surrounds later as the budget allows.

Polk rm6750 is $199 at Newegg and is better than the rm705.

Or parts express 5.0 package.

Plus Energy s10.3 from Newegg for $199. Great setup for $330!

Thanks for the suggestions - Especially Parts-Express. I need to look into it further, but I also found Dayton HTP-3 5.1 Kit for 199. Includes a 12" powered woofer where everything else we looked at had a 8".
