I think i should, not cause i want to but cause its money just sitting there not used to its potential. Not the PS3 but im gonna sell my 5.1 cuase now in canada is the worst time for canadians. Cant rent blurays, cant rent games. No Blockbusters or rogers as they all shut down. No online bluray rental service yet. Netflix sucks compared to in the U.S.

And i aint paying for new blurays, screw that. I dont buy movies period, i only ever rented. So now that i cant watch blurays unless i pretty much buy them, whats the point of having 5.1 when ive watched 2, yes 2 movies in the past year!!! And it seems most movies now are lame or dissapointments. And bought 1 PS3 game in the past year. And currently have 0 PS3 games, sold them all for cash cause it was a huge waste of money sitting there.

Do you listen to music? I'm a music first guy and love to listen in Pro Logic II music mode, so I would still use all 5 speakers and subs all the time. If you don't use your system for either movies or music, then yeah I would sell.

I have a very nice set of 2.1 speakers on my comptuer for music. Ive never used my 5.1 for music cause its in my bedroom anyways, only used it for TV, movies and games. But right now it seems its just for TV cause i hardly even game anymore and havent put in a BR for about a year. The 2 movies I watched last year were downloaded from PS store cause i have no choice.

I don't mean to sound like a smart aleck, but can't you rent dvds? They may offer only 480 lines of resolution, but unless you have a really large screen and/or sit really close to it, most dvds look fine to me (on our 42" HDTV at least)....and this is via an 8 year old Panasonic dvd player using its component connection. And Dolby Digital and especially DTS 5.1 soundtracks can still sound very good through my own 5.1 system.

No good movies: ah man there are LOADS of good - and great - movies available on Blu-ray and especially dvd!! Starting all the way back to the 1930s! Good stories are good stories, no matter if they were shot on film or using a digital camera.

Some classics of various categories.....

* humor - Airplane!; and made by the same people & better IMO, Top Secret!
* western - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (it's haunting theme song)
* sci-fi - 2001: A Space Odyssey (trailer here; try not to be in a hurry with this film!)
* anti-establishment - Fight Club
* plain ol' adventure - Twister
* action - The Towering Inferno
* honorable warriors - 300; and Spartacus (true story)

FYI: not all the above include 5.1 soundtracks, but again, if the story sucks who cares what it sounds like?

But if you want to downgrade, how about just losing the center and rears, and sub if your left/rights are large enough? I have to agree with smasher50 & ziegljo1 - I couldn't deal with just the TV speakers!

I totally disagree!! Do you have your cable box hooked up to your receiver and the sound in 5.1 from your cable box? It sounds great for movies, not as good as dvd/blu-ray of course but pretty damn good. The HBO show Game of Thrones had incredible sound both in surround and bass.

Also music channels like Palladia sound so good on the 5.2 system.

Yes I have it connected through optical.

Among various TVs, I think relatively speaking some have better sound, but none I've heard have better sound than a pair of $100 bookshelves from just about any brand & paired with even an entry-level stereo receiver. Not even close.

And I agree with Carp - there's lots of TV shows with enjoyable surrround soundtracks. Even Simpsons episodes starting back in the mid 90s included Dolby Surround tracks with some fun effects. FYI: many TV shows are encoded with Dolby Surround, starting back in the late 80s. Not quite as discrete as Dolby Digital but still fully capable of directional sound effects.

1) Why didn't you buy movies when Blockbuster went out of business? I spent ~$1500, but I got around 300 blu-rays out of it. Seems like a lot of money, but I paid ~$5 for each one, ranging from things like American Psycho to Zack And Miri Make A Porno.

2) How much was it for a rental? $5-$7? Look in Best Buy's flyer ever week and you'll see new releases for as low as $15, and regular blu-rays for $7-$10.

Transporter 2 - $7: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/transporter-2-2005-blu-ray/m2125501.aspx?path=eee3166f2ed33f44f4c83eff5a460631en02
Man On Fire - $7: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/man-on-fire-2004-blu-ray/m2129883.aspx?path=db83be84b63f1b6dce90621dee585be7en02
Simpsons Movie - $7: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/simpsons-movie-2007-blu-ray/m2142734.aspx?path=f72dfbfd6375fcf410e4eb9f3bf9b8a6en02
Robocop - $7: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/robocop-1987-blu-ray/m2140818.aspx?path=e86fc5952f4008e0b75f885c678e6a92en02
Underworld: Evolution - $10: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/underworld-evolution-2006-blu-ray/m2114491.aspx?path=042dbda1bd0e1729117a1bb6b2944daden02

I could go on...

Granted, some movie prices are ridiculous ($38 for Due Date), but just wait for a sale.

Did zip.ca shut down?

In terms of LFE, size does matter!
