Let me start by saying, I do not know a single thing about sound. What I do know is that I want the sound to be one of the very strong points in my theater room. I believe sound is probably the most important thing in a theater and it really makes the movie.

I've been suggested by two places that I went into to go with B&W for the front speakers and then something cheaper for the surround sound. I would really like to keep my budget in the $2K to 3K range. 3K only if it's that much better then something I can do for 2K to $2500....(budget includes receiver)

That said, is there any other speakers I should be considering? I'm ok with floor standing or anything else. The room is 18'3" by 15'.

I will also need a receiver for which ever speakers are suggested so taking suggestions there.

Thank you for the help.

684 are not the best for the money. I suggest 685 all around (tree pairs), add sub from SVS or HSU and mid-range Denon reciever. It will gives you nice 6.1 setup for close to $3000 sufficient for your room.

at that price range I would suggest that you look at the

Monitor Audio RX1, RX Center and RX1 for surrounds.

Then you can add in a nice Onkyo or Marantz receiver from www.accessories4less.com

And a Hsu VTF2-4.

Audio Advisor also has some decent metal stands for not too much.

Dynaudio Focus 260s, Focus 210C, DM 2/6, Hsu VTF2 MK4, Oppo BDP-103,
Naim Nait XS-2, Jolida FX Tube DAC, Integra DTR-40.2, 55" Panasonic Plasma

Well that all depends. What do you have in mind?

Callas01, since I don't know much about sound can you tell me why you suggest those speakers over the B&W?

Thanks

I like the monitor audios more open sound, as the B&Ws to me sound veiled and more coloured, and better bass response the what B&W offers. I feel the MAs are more detailed as well. The MAs portray music with better realism, and have highs that can be more extended, so theyd make gun shots and explosions sound better, IMO.

Revel
Dynaudio
Salk Sound
Ascend Acoustics
Philharmonic Audio
Kef
Soundfield Audio

All of those are better than B&W in my opinion. If this is a dedicated theater and you won't listen to music, check out Chase Home Theater and Elemental Designs Cinema series.

Happy hunting sir!

Everything on that site, www.accessories4less.com is refurbished stuff. Is this site one that people use much around here? The refurb part scares me a bit

It is a good site, they have been in business a long time - I have bought from them with
good success.

So you are suggesting I use the same speakers (RX1) for the side speakers and the surround? Is there a flush wallmount speaker you can suggest for surround as I would prefer that.

Edit: MA has these so I guess I could go with them..

You can use these and stay in budget, wall mounted, but not in-wall. You may even be able to get the RX2s for the front, if you go with these surrounds.

That might be a little out of my price range and I would really like in wall mounts. Is surround sound speakers that important that I should be spending that much on them?

If you are going to watch a lot of movies, yes surrounds are important. Not as important as say the front 3 and a sub, but you don't want to miss the surround sound involvement/envelopement. Me I am more into music, I have Dynaudio speakers up front, but I use some cheaper Mission speakers for surrounds. Eventually I'll get Dyns in the back, but when it makes sense.

If you audition them side by side with B&W, you will understand why.

I will look into auditioning again but it could've been the stores set up that didn't impress me with the b&w sound...any elaboration may provide the op some info for his choice.

First i'm surprised that you didn't take in count a Bose system, not for the sound but for the popularity those systems have among beginners.

Well i have had the b&w 684 for three months with a Denon avr1912 and to me sounds great. Before bougth them i compared to Monitor Audio RX6 and PSB T6 and didn't know what to choose between the MA's and B&W, but finally decided to go with 684, not something special, maybe the MA seemed to me to much bassy for the destinated room.

It is the best system i have had, but nothing much to compare. First i got a Bose 321 gs series iii ( beginner case) which i think sounds good for movies (for a 2.1) but lacks a lot with music. The i got a HK avr 1600 with HKTS-20BQ speakers, sounded better than bose in music. Replace two of them for fronts with Polk audio R300, it improves a lot. Then i sold the Bose and got a denon avr 1912 and the 684's as fronts and the R/C/Sub is part of the HKTS-20BQ.
