I am planning on whole house audio and looking for inputs for in-ceiling speakers.
Not for critical listening (I have a decent 5.1 for it). I plan to upgrade the 5.1s to B&Q 685 book shelves or 683 fronts.

I believe in-celings are not popular in these forums, but I wodon't think 3-4 pairs of on-wall speakers would look ok in a room (open floor plan kitchen, dining, formal living and living room are all connected)
I plan on investing in a total of 6 pairs (L&R music for avg sized rooms) and 3 single speakers for each of the baths.
Budget: 200/pair 300 would be a stretch

From what i've read, I should buy sealed/enclosed speakers?
Though I am not a huge fan of Polk (they are not too bad), the RC80i get rave reviews on amazon/crutch field. Makes me wonder if i should really invest more for bg music?

Much thx!

Since you are not talking about critical listening and it is for
background music - then check out Snell
A very good close-out price

Great! Thx.

Are these better than the Polk RC80is? Definitely seems like a huge discount.

Also, should i even bother to buy sealed/enclosed speakers?

Sealed/enclosed would be up to you. For background and non-critical listening,
it is not a big deal to me. Hands down - my choice is Snell over Polk.

Good Luck!

I recently installed a pair of the BG Radia Ethereal ERT-6CJ (http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ETHERT6C/Ethereal-ERT-6CJ-6.5-In-Ceiling-Speakers-BG-Radia-Ribbon-Tweeter-Pr/1.html) in a lofted ceiling. They are used solely for "background music". They are lacking in lower end bass as you would expect. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the mid/high range quality. They sound really good, especially for the price. They do have tweeters that can be swiveled for more control.

However, I cannot compare them to the Snell speakers that were recommended above, except to say the price is identical wink.gif

Thx. What about these - http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-NS-IC600-In-Ceiling-Speakers-White/dp/B0046RE04A (Yamaha NS-IC600 In-Ceiling Speakers)

They are sealed too.My pont is, if sealed is the ultimate thing for ceiling speakers, should i bother to get sealed at all? especially since they are in the 100-200 range.

Thx again.

All in all, closed-back speakers are the better way to go. Since, this is a major
concern with you > buy the closed-back speakers.

Thx Guys. I had some professional installers do a house survey and they suggested using Proficient speakers for whole house audio/background music. They are open to me buying the speakers as well.
I did some research and generally Proficient speakers do get good reviews?

Now, I also have two rooms that are set-up for 5.1 home theater -
1. Room 1 - Living room - This is the place I spend most time, have most parties etc and thinking of floor standing 3-4k budget
I was thinking B&W 683s + 685 or bookshelf 685s all the way (L, C, R)
2. Room 2 - Game room - The installers suggested using 'In-Walls' since its not critical listening per se, helps stay at a lower budget & floor standing would eat-up a lot of room as well.
Any suggestions for In-Wall speakers (5.1 set-up) in the 2 to 2.5k range?

They are still working on the estimates for pulling wires, speakers installation etc, so don't have all details yet.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thx

It will be your call on the background speakers.

Audition the B&W speakers, and make sure that is the sound you desire.

In-wall speakers tend to be a somewhat fixed situation, make sure you
want to go this route. On-wall speakers can be more flexable.

For in-wall and good brands
Triad Bronze speakers would be a good option

Atlantic Technology, is another good one

Also, Boston and Definitive Technology make good stuff.

I have Proficient Audio in-ceilings. In-ceiling definitely has some compromises, but I've been pretty pleased with Proficient speakers (mostly C640s and 660s). Not tinny at all and pretty good range. Make sure the installers take soundproofing measures with these!
