All I need to finish my 7.1 is the rear surrounds. Here is what I have so far:

Denon 2112 reciever
Pioneer C21 center
Pioneer FS-51 fronts
Pioneer BS-21 side surrounds
Klipsch RW-12D subwoofer

I need the speakers to be small and I need them to be on stands. there is a lot of room behind my couch so wall mounting would put them way too far back. I also want to move them out of the way easy when the movie does not support 7.1, which will probably be pretty often, to allow for more walking room. I only want decent quality, as they are merely the rear surrounds. any help is much appreciated.

I guess you consider another pair of BS-21 speakers to be too large?

That should be a nice-sounding system you have now.

Do you really think two more speakers will make it sound better? More is not always better!

If you really want more speakers, and the BS-21 is too large, I suggest the Cambridge Audio S20 speakers.

Speaker stands should always be strong, rigid, and heavy; preferably with a sand-filled steel column, and have floor spikes. The stand should always weigh more than the speaker.

and yes, the bs-21s are way too heavy to have on a tall stand, way too top heavy

I would skip the Pyle and look at NXG - forum member JimWilson likes them.

The Mirage speakers have a omnipolar design where they disperse 360* sound througout the room. Makes them great for surround speakers.

Should you replace your other surround speakers? I dunno, that's up to you.

The BS-21's are a tonal match to your front speakers so they have that advantage.

so what would anyone do here, get 2 mirage speakers for the rear surround and keep the pioneer bs-21 speakers for the side surround, or just get 4 mirages and use the bs-21s elsewhere?
thanks

If you choose NXG - yes you can.

or should i just get another set of the bs-21s and deal with the bulk? if i do that, they will have to be below ear level heightwise.

right now im leaning toward the nxg's. im a little worried about the mirage's because it seems like they might be for a room where it isnt possible to get exact placement of speakers. since i will have all of the speakers placed right where they should be, maybe the directional is the way to go???

When there is open floor behind a couch in which you wish to position a rear surround speaker pair, an alternative to the usual 'bookshelf speaker on a stand' solution is to use an additional pair of floor standing speakers, e.g., another pair of Pioneer FS-51 speakers. This can be a cost effective solution vs bookshelves-plus-stands, but the efficacy is more dependent on room geometry, couch back height, and whether or not you really want to remove the rear speaker pair when you play a 5.1 movie, rather than engaging (say) DPLIIx post processing...?!

So upstairs I have a cheapo Panasonic 5.1 with wireless rear speakers. I rarely use the rear speakers at all so it's basically a 3.1. The surround speakers in this htib are 3 ohm 130w speakers. Could I use them with my 6 ohm pioneers and Denon 2112 receiver?

you make a good point. maybe another set of the fs-51 towers back there would be the best way to go. but then do i stop there or should i then get yet another set of the towers to replace the side surround bs-21s?

That will depend somewhat on just how well your receiver's room-speaker compensation software will likely work in this case. You might consider posting that question in the appropriate thread for the Denon 2112 within the Receivers, AMPs, and Processors forum.

Probably not, your receiver is not rated for 3 ohm speakers.

Generally HTIB speakers like that are designed to only work with the accompanying system. You could try it though, if they don't seem to work very well just unplug them.

If they're wireless, how do they connect to the Denon receiver?

You want rear surrounds to act as bipolar speakers. They should be diffuse.

ok, so things have changed slightly. instead of having the rear surrounds on stands, i will be mounting them to the ceiling and running cables inside the walls to them. so basically i will be just mounting to the ceiling, that is the only differece. i am leaning towards the mirage nanostats, but are there any other suggestions? thanks.
