this will be interesting indeed.

You should invite some friends over and do a blind test.

Carp can tell you about cost, but the spandex and wood frame material you need can be had for $50 bucks. A blind test is a lot of fun.

They are thin - 9" depth. My TV stand is about 14" from the front wall. So I just put four of these Velodyne subs behind the TV stand. biggrin.gif

This picture shows 3 Velodyne subs (I added one more after this picture was taken):

16 bucks for the wood and screws, 44 for the material. BTW, you saw I took the frames apart, but I kept everything for then next time... you know there will be a next time. smile.gif

So based on the six score cards in this blinded study, the total scores:

eD = 117
JTR = 146.5
SHO = 153.5
RD = 104

In other words, a person looking at the scores might conclude the overall favorite in this blinded study are the SHO-12 speakers.

If this were a Heisman Trophy race, the SHO-12 would be the Heisman Trophy winner. biggrin.gif

And those who disagree would say that the winner isn't necessarily the best. biggrin.gif

What's also interesting is what the guesses tell us about biases going in. People guessed the ones they rated the highest were the JTR's whereas people guessed the worse sounding speakers were the SHO's in large part.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence

It's just natural to assume the higher priced speakers would perform better (and they did for movies IMO, the JTR's were the best).

However, I don't think too many people thougth the CHT's were the worst sounding speaker while we were blind (speaker D), I know I didn't think that.

3 of the speakers sounded very very similar IMO.

Although we all know how bias can affect our perceptions, it still amazes me. I was one of the first to get the SHO-10's and its nice to see some validation of my impressions back then. I remember cranking the Jeff Beck bluray, "Live at Ronnie Scotts" at 110dB at my LP and I was blown away. I posted those impressions and had to deal with a barrage of doubters convinced those rough built $300 speakers could never sound that good eek.gif. Of course I had to be a paid shill smile.gif.

Oh well, been enjoying them ever since...

Carp's Blind Speaker Meet Results.xlsx 14k .xlsx file

Carp's Blind Speaker meet Pic.JPG 171k .JPG file

Speaker C won everything but smoothness on our combined vote tally --- smoothness was won by Speaker B. Clarity was also a tie between Speaker B and C.

See the attached XLS and pic.

It wasn't a perfect test, and the scores don't necessarily show all the nuances, but what test ever is perfect?. It was, at least, truly blind, and as you can tell by our guesses -- they were just that - guesses.

If you read the subjective comments on page 2 you can get a complimentary picture of impressions to supliment the numbers.

I'm really interested in your results DefTechGuy.

I currently have a complete deftech system myself and like it but I don't love it. I merely have 8020STs and an 8040HD in the front, but I don't like the 8040HDs sound. It just isn't "immersive" or filling enough. It's hard to explain. Maybe a larger speaker will take care of that issue. I will probably keep my other deftech surrounds. I own a 7.2 system

Lol now that is quiet unfortunate. That personally to me is a big no no. I once had a captivator on order, waited 2 weeks and still had no eta. Canceled it and bought dual vtf 15s. I understand that waiting for a quality product is good but not months.

They have a thread stating they will run out of sho-10's for 45 days. Should not be a surprise on waiting.

You will not be charged until your order ships. If you feel October is too long a wait, you can always cancel your order. If, by October, you've not found anything you'd rather have, you can place your order again.

I bought my SHO's last month and it took them around 2 weeks after I had the speakers to charge my credit card.biggrin.gif

I remember Craig saying recently that they have some b-stock speakers ready to ship.
The downside is that home trial policy does not apply to b-stock items. In my case however Craig gave an okay for the trial as long as i agree on a modest restocking fee

I could be wrong, but I believe that the speakers we used for the GTG (thanks to Huskeromaha) were the same models that are now B stock.

I came across your post about the Soundfield Audio HT1 on another forum. It was from June. I have not seen any updates since then and their website still has them as coming soon. Have you heard anything new? They look to be very interesting.

Thanks.

PS I will mirror other peoples statements and say the SHO-10's are a great speaker.

I thought those were the monitor one series and not the HT1 series. They seem to be two different speakers on the web-site.

Does anyone know what year build the JTR T8 were? Also were they the LP (Low Profile) or vented model. I only ask as I believe all 2011 and newer models uses an improved compression driver and different crossover.

Does anyone know what year and type of JTRs were used during the blind test?

Also, does anyone know if the Chase speakers have improvements over previous year's models?

As far as the Chase goes, the models in the shoot-out were the first generation. The cabinets and finish have been improved in the subsequent model years. Nothing has changed as far as drivers and cross-overs, the performance remains pretty much the same from what I have been told.

The horn went from a 90x60(?) to a 90x90. Also, the ports went from round to slotted.

Doh!!! I don't know how I forgot about the horn change.redface.gif No more needing to rotate the horn for horizontal placement.
