It's been a loooooong time since I've posted on these forums and almost as long since I've even visited them, mostly because I'm happy with my current system and haven't had any problems with it.

Flash forward to now, I'm currently offshore with someone who recently got a media room installed in his house and was talking all about it and I inquired about what kind of system he had and he mentioned that he's got a 90" Sharp Aquos TV and (of course) a Bose speaker system to go along with it.

When I found that out, I ended up educating him about Bose vs. other speaker companies, etc. and he decided he wanted to upgrade to something that's actually good (he's fairly liberal with spending money) but it's been so long since I've looked into speakers and receivers so I have no idea what to recommend.

His media room is apparently about 12'x18' and he said he's got up to $5,000 to spend and wants a 7.1 system (plus receiver) but like I said, I don't know what kind of system that will buy. He would use it mostly for movies but he's also a big boxing nut so he'd use it for the occasional PPV boxing fight as well, though I'm not sure how much that would change things.

I tried searching through other threads in here but it seems as though every one had different requirements for different sized rooms for slightly different systems so hopefully you don't mind that I started a new thread.

Anyways, thanks in advance for your help.

There are sooo many choices in this price range it's crazy...but for me and for movie or music use I will recommend one of my fav's.I am a big definitive fan so I will recommend the following.

deftech 8060-st towers 2000 for the pair:

and for surrounds the pro monitor 800's:145 each

So you don't think a dedicated subwoofer would be a better option than integrated into the speakers?

A dedicated subwoofer is always a must, because the best place for your front L&R speakers is rarely ever the best place for your subs. You want good stereo imaging from your fronts and you want the flexibility to place your subs wherever they will sound best.

Look at this for a Receiver http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKTXNR809/Onkyo-TX-NR809-7.2-Channel-Network-A/V-Receiver/1.html

Look at Chase Home Theater SHO 10 or PRO 10 speakers OR Elemental Designs Cinema 12 speakers etc...
Subs: Dual HSU VTF-15H, Dual Epik Empires, Dual SVS PB12 NSD or PC12 NSD etc.....
