How do these compare with the B&W's as far as bass, treble, imaging, clarity, etc?? Also, would these speakers be able to actually be put in a bookshelf? With my current set up I have some B&W 602's (older version of yours) turned on their side in my shelf. The reason I went with them was the front port vs. rear. I am really interested in the 530's but not sure if they would be a good fit for me... Also, what center do you have them paired with?

Next questions
Are the 530s discontinued?
Does anybody know where to get a pair in either color?
Is there going to be a replacement if they are discontinued?
Will they make any improvements?

Thanks guys. bummed I cant find a set anywhere.
They are still available through JBL's website and I believe through Adorama.com. That store has A brick and mortar spot in Manhattan I believe. I have the 590's and the sound is fantastic,i'm thinking about getting a pr. of the 530's myself also.

JBL has had them on sale on and off for the last few months for $419.95 a pr, just pay attention to the site.

You can also signup on JBL's website, they do blast out the email when they go on sale.

They are fantastic and I highly recommend them.

My Simple 5.1 setup

I see you have the DefTech SM350's for surrounds. How do those compare to the 530's? I dont' think the 530's will work for me as I need something that is not rear ported, but looking for some comparison.. Thanks!

The DefTech 350's are a great speaker. I've had them for almost 6, maybe 7 years and I've owned many other DefTech speakers but compared to the 530's its night and day. The JBL's blow the DefTech 350's out of the water. Sound stage, depth, clarity, etc... I could go on for a while.

When I got them I listened to CD's but I kept starting the songs over. I had to go back and re-listen to parts I know and know really well because things I never heard before I could hear. It sounds different, better and that's what sold me. Simply amazing.

I will give the win to DefTech on the sensitivity, the get loud, very easily while the JBL's do require a decent amount of power.

For you situation, if it helps, The Jbl's come with a foam port plug. I've never used it but you might be able to get away with it.

I subscribe to Z-reviews, he is also active on this form, he did a pretty good and funny review of the JBL's.

So does the port plug make a difference in the sound? I have ruled out so many speakers due to them being rear ported, but never realized you could plug them. I really appreciate the response as I may be selling some of my speakers and "upgrading" to these bad boys. Thanks!

I don't know, when I bought the speakers I believe I tossed them with the boxes.

Sure does, especially given placement close to the rear wall.

Interesting to see that they are still available, at least in the US. Over here (at the other side of the planet) I can only find them at a few hifi specialist stores, some only the larger speakers, some only the 530 in veneer.

Tried the 530's using a bunch of receivers: Pioneer (too bright) an Onkyo (disappointing mid-range) and now a pro-level Denon with Crown pro amps. As good as it gets within my budget imho. Super clean, clinical sound. If it isn't in the source, you will not be hearing it. Love it for movies. Just watched the 1st season of Outlander on blu-ray - the opening song is fantastic e.g... makes you wonder why the h*ll are CD's sounding so crappy nowadays.

Used to love the Marantz sound on my Kef's, but after a couple of repairs of the Marantz (both receiver as cd/dvd player), and the multiple repairs of the Onkyo I totally got fed up with it and went pro-gear. At least they are backed by a 3 year no fault warranty and generate way less heat.

One could argue that using a Crown XLS1500 is a bit overdone for a couple of bookshelf speakers like the 530 and the 520c, but at least it is not straining. And it is future proof as to say. Having said that, I am impressed how loud they can go - and still sound clean with no sign of distortion.

Still love the speakers! In my small to moderate room the 530's are a great fit.

Those were port plug? I threw mine away, thought they were oversized ear plugs...lol
The 530's are nice, even in 2 channel without a sub provider ample bass for music, as long as you are not a basshead.

Hi, just wanted to add that 3 pairs of the JBL 530 are currently available on "Amazon.de" (german amazon) for 449 euro (510 $).

If you find it totally impossible to get hold of a pair in the U.S this might be an option, although I'm not sure if it's even possible to get them over seas....oh well, this goes out to any europeans too, there is still some of these available unused!

I was lucky to get hold of the last pair of 530's before the reseller on amazon bumped up the price by 50 euro...and as every comment here says, they are flawless. Especially in a relatively small room which I use them in.

To my surprise I also found the 520c, also on the german amazon for 279 euro, with only 1 being in stock from the same reseller. I didn't hesitate one moment and bought them shortly after, even though I only have a stereo amp at the moment and not an AVR : /
I didn't matter too much as I knew I had made a pretty good investment.

This comment was pretty much just to say that the JBL studio 5 series is really hard to find anywhere in the EU also...but hey, 3 pairs available if you desperately need them. I had no luck finding any 570, 580, 590 or the 550 amp anywhere...but for me the 530's and a good matching center channel for movies is pretty much all I'm gonna need for many years.
Guess I got lucky with my purchases.

Dammit, I love my 530's, but these are in my shopping cart right now, just waiting for me to hit the "place your order" button. I don't think I can resist. Especially considering I can get 12 months no financing. What to do, what to do.

I couldn't resist. Order placed.

My room is only 19x13 feet, so hopefully they work well enough in that space.

Considering that JBL has these on back-order and not due in until the middle of June, I hope Amazon has plenty of them. That price is unbelievable.

Music area: Magnepan 3.6, McIntosh MC2205 amp & C48 preamp, SVS SB13-Ultra, Oppo BDP 95, dbx 3BX, and assorted equipment.
Movie area: EMP Tek E5Bi (were rebadged to R5Bi), RBH/EMP Tek R55Ti, PSA S3000i, Denon X2000, Oppo BDP 83.

Actually, I think that the 530's are delayed until May 20th. Might just order me a set and check them out. Is it May yet.....LOL!!!!!

Those 590's are such a ridiculous deal. The 530's while outstanding are $600 and worth every penny, but I just paid $899 for the 590's. Granted, I bought my 530's for $479, but this is crazy. One day, these will be a sought after JBL speaker because they are so good, and they will stop making them at some point.

Just look what vintage L100's sell for, and those aren't even good JBL's...at least to me.

Went ahead and ordered a pair myself. These will be going in my great room which is about 8000 cubic feet (20 x 20 x 20 basically). Been running some Atlantic Technology FS4000s for years in there along with a couple of SVS PC12+'s. Low end's always been pretty good, but those poor AT's seem to get lost, especially for dialog. Will see how I like these and then look at rounding things out. Hope these are as good as everyone says they are. Was eyeing up the new NHT C4s, but at this price, might be a no-brainer!

That is a serious good deal on the 590's - those looking for towers should look hard at them..

You guys who are getting these for that $450 each are in for a treat. I paid full price a few months ago and I also tried some ID towers that were around $1000 each and I also listened to quite a few high-end speakers in a local home audio specialty shop and the JBL 590's were my favorite even against speakers costing 2-3 times as much or more.

They also sound amazing even without a sub, with no sub it sounds like there is a little sub playing. Granted they have 2 8" in them but one of the ID brands I auditioned in home had 2 10" in them and they did not even come close to the 590's for midbass and deeper bass, who was a whole other level. Granted most of us run subs for the really deep and high SPL bass but it is nice to be able to just listen to 2 channel at times and it be full and not like something is missing like some other speakers sound if not used with a subwoofer.

I am running these with a Seaton Submersive and to me, it is some of the best sound I have personally heard. Of course, I am biased being as it is "my" equipment

Oh, one thing I will say is the build quality on these is not exactly "high" quality and the most "durable" and JBLs boxing on speakers this large leaves something to be desired in my opinion. When I did first order them online from Amazon the both arrived damaged. So I sent them back and ordered them from the local shop. Maybe I just had bad luck that first order but I don't think so. I think people will be lucky to get them arriving in perfect condition. Just read a few reviews on Amazon for the 590s and others didn't fair so well either. But hopefully, the packages all make it to you guys in good shape. I tell you it about made me want to cry seeing these beauties show up and chunks of wood literally being busted out of them in shipping, someone had to have tried to damage them from the way it looked, they were a wreck but also packaged horribly. Note that first pair was from Amazon and listed as new but not in the original box so maybe the original box will fair better but even they don't look to be the sturdiest either from what I saw in the ones I bought from the local shop.

If you've never heard the 590's before you're going to be surprised how good they sound, I use 3 for my left -center - right in my HT. If I had somewhere else to use them I'd buy some, this deal is almost to good to be true.

I was wondering if it would matter what surrounds you have (especially being the horn tweeters in these).
I currently have E-80 fronts and EC-25 center with E-10 surrounds.
Really tempted to replace the LCR with pair of 590 and 520C. But just bit concerned if there is a timber matching issue with surrounds.
I also have atmos that uses same E-10 for heights.
APpreciate your inputs.

Try them with a Sony STR-ZA1000ES. Sweet
