Right now I am more than satisfied with my 530's, they are simply amazing. I was really surprised seeing someone mention the JBL 230 being better than the SVS Ultra, as I thought the SVS would be better than the 530 (being 1000$ a pair).
I'm in no way looking to upgrade in the bear future, but it's always nice knowing what's out there to compare to
I'd like to know other bookshelf speakers, as I don't really like having towers. (No dedicated room for HT)

Speakers I have had in mind are the SVS Ultras and the Buchardt s300's. Have any og you had any experience with those?
I would focus on the room i.e. treatments before going from speaker to speaker.

I didn't hear anything better than the 5 series until I heard the 1400 Array, which are much more expensive and no longer made, though you can sometimes find them and the smaller models (array 800 and 1000) used. For me, nothing compares to a compression driver for mids and highs.

I agree. Room treatments are something a lot of us ignore. I am going to invest my time into it this year after I lay the laminate in my room and take care of a few other projects.

As you guys know, I recently replaced my entire B&W front stage with Studio 5 towers. I'm looking now to replace my rears. I'd like the 530's but they're not available anymore. As an alternative, what do you guys think of the Studio 230's? They will be replacing a pair of DALI Lektor 3's which sound far too different from the Studio 5's.

Hi everyone,
Sorry if I missed this in the thread but I was searching around and had no hits.
I have both the Centre Channel of the Series 5 and the two book shelfs (520) for my surrounds. The question is I am looking to mount these to the walls. Baby is now starting to get around pretty fast (9 months) and best they are not on floor stands.
Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated, and how to mount options.

JBL Studio Series 5 - The Magic Guaranteed

After debating what to do for the surrounds, I ended up ordering a pair of Volt 6 LX DIY kits with angled flat packs from http://www.diysoundgroup.com. Will let people know how these perform with my 590 LCR. If these don't work out, I guess I might get the 230 like some of you have.

JBL didn't use the horn loaded compression driver to increase sensitivity like Klipsch does so the results are totally different.

I've had the Studio 530's for two years and just ordered the 590's the other day. I love these JBL's.
Me also. I purchased 4 530's, 1 520C, 1 550P years ago. Have replaced my receiver a few times , but no urge to change my JBL's. I love them. Now I run then with a Sony str-za100es AV Receiver for over 1 year. I love it. Also using a Himedia q5 pro for my streaming needs

Maybe this has been posted before but I hadn't seen it. I thought it was interesting as I haven't seen Greg Timbers comment on the Studio 500 series. This was from another form when someone asked his opinion of the Studio 500 series.

http://www.audioheritage.org/vbullet...l=1#post386936

"Other than being a face only a Mother could love, the Studio series is really great sounding stuff. The little compression driver is amazing and Jerry Moro did a great job on the woofers. We had them made in China, but the supplier implemented Jerry's design. We had a jerk for an Industrial Designer at the time and his taste was all in his mouth. I did what I could to salvage the acoustics of the design and fortunately, they work as well as stuff costing 2 or 3 times the money. The fit and finish isn't so great but buy them for the sound. They use really good components so they should last a very long time."

@John Schuermann

I have been following the Speaker Shootout thread Speaker Shootout - two of the most accurate and well reviewed speakers ever made and see a few Revel and JBL speaker Spinoramas. Does JBL do Sinoramas for the Studio 500 series also? If so could post some or does a person just have to contact JBL to get them? I would like to see the 590 since that is what I own

I tried googling them but didn't see anything other than some review that just did on axis measurements.

What in ceiling speakers do you guys recommend to go with the 590s for atmos duty. I am building a pair of diysoundgroup Volt 6 with an angled enclosure for my side surrounds. I am wondering if I need to match my atmos speakers to the mains for timbre or does it matter.

All matching is best but hanging a 590 from the ceiling may be a bit much

I would keep all of the surrounds and ceiling speakers the same model. As the sound leaves the front stage, it will remain consistent as travels beside, over, and behind you.

I would jump on these for my rear but I don't really have the room. I was going to build the Volt 6 which I already built a pair as a test.

Dang, that is a good deal. These speakers have to be on the way out I would think as these last few sales have been too good for them to last much longer. What is next the 590's for $300 or under each?

For the 590 the CD in the horn is $85 and the 8" $90 each and the crossovers $50-75?. Just buying all the parts you would have a good chunk of $$$ in just the part compared to the cost of what they have been selling for and that doesn't include building a cabinet and finishing it.

That is a good deal. In fact I might have gotten one of these for my center instead of the 590, but on the other hand, I like having all 3 LCR the same (590). My room's back is not really designed for floor standers since I have a door there and some equipment rack there. I had wall mounted speakers for surround. I sold my klipsch wall mounted surrounds and am building a pair of DIY Volt 6. Still not done with it I spent over $330 for a pair of that and a lot of time.

Thanks for the link!

I just bought 4 for my surrounds. Now I need to find some used 530 or 520c for Atmos. The SCS is a great surround speaker, but I prefer to use speakers that can be used as L/C/R. At that price, I am all in because I have the room.

My litmus test is putting the surround in the front sound stage. That test is very revealing of a speakers limitations or performance. I really liked my 4722's as surrounds but they were just too big and too close to image properly for surrounds. This will be a great middle ground and should improve multi-channel music which has been lacking since the migration to SCS 8.

Not as big and ugly but still kinda big and ugly

Using them as surrounds, but my Dad has them as his mains. He doesn't have a sub and they are nice and punchy with music. I really can't tell much off a difference x-ing them @ 80hz between the 590's. I really love the studio 5 series. I really, really miss all matching, so I am probably going to sell my beloved 4722's and replace them with 590's. Once you get used to all matching speakers from the same family, it ruins you. You know how much I love my 4722's, so that is saying a lot. Sadly, having (7) 4722s was just too much space for my room. I also need to downsize speaker size because we may be selling the house and downsizing due to kids going off to college.

I got that banner by the way....thanks my friend When you coming back up? You doing ok in the flooding?

There have been multiple warnings from staff here about talking price and posting links, which is why I did not do so. Sounds like you found something.

Sorry, should have clarified. They have specific links where it is OK to talk prices, and that is one of them. There is also one in the Receivers section as a sticky as well.

I am not being a "cop" so to speak, but I have seen the warnings as of late, so I am real careful when pointing out something price or vendor related.

I get it I was just wondering. I tried doing a search for prices and rules and even read the terms of service. Seems each section varies of the forum.

I would imagine many have bought the Studio 500 when they were on sale and it was posted here that otherwise probably wouldn't have bought them. So that is a bummer if we are not supposed to post sale prices or links.

Doing well considering.
I've been in a hotel in Waco since Thursday late night.

No flooding but we are about 45 miles north on the coast from Rockport where the eye went through.

Lots of downed trees against the house but no intrusion into it.

Thanks and understand the big and ugly. I still need to hear some.
