I'm been a long time lurker on these forums and found a wealth of information but I'm stuck and looking for advice on putting together a surround setup for my bedroom. The room is W12' x L13' so space is at a premium and not something that I have normally had to take into account when putting together a decent speaker setup. I really having difficulty picking something compact that will also not sound like wet tissue paper wrapped over a toilet paper tube.

I'm looking for recommendations on a full set of speakers and a receiver in the price range of $1500 - $3000. My primary uses would be watching movies and streamed netflix through my boxee box.

5 channel? 7 channel? ? You have no idea at all of things you're considering yet? What kind of lurker are you? wink.gif

Since you're looking for subjective recommendations: I'd suggest looking at Ascend for speakers, good bang for the buck (ascendacoustics.com) Set of 170SEs across the front with some 200SEs for surrounds and maybe hook up with a Rythmik sub they can package for you would sound great. Maybe a HSU combo set of speakers/sub. AVR you'll do fine with in the $300-500 range (look at Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon, Yamaha among others) with a good feature set and sufficient power for pretty loud in the bedroom with reasonably efficient speakers.

Look at Focal 705V speakers, $100 off per pair - they are also cheaper than
their center channel speaker - they can also be wall mounted if needed.
Buy 3 pair and use one speaker as a center channel

I am mainly looking for a 5.1 setup and I didn't post anything I had been considering because I was hoping for some unbiased answers. I was initially looking at an energy 5.1 setup but decided against it after I started to read up on ascend and hsu speakers.

After doing some looking around today with the recommendations in this thread, I'm leaning towards:

Hybrid 2 - 5.1 Package in Satin Black
http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/hybrid2pkg.html

Marantz SR5006 AV Receiver
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR5006/Marantz-SR5006-AV-Receiver-with-Networking-and-AirPlay/1.html

or

Yamaha-RX-V671

The Marantz receiver seems like a great deal but I am somewhat leery of buying a refurbished receiver.

It is up to you on speaker choice and receiver. I have bought Denon and Marantz refurbish receivers
with no problems. Good Luck.

I just wanted to reply back and mention how pleased I am with the Hsu speakers and the Marantz receiver. The sound is perfect for the smaller room and I am frankly a little shocked at just how nice the speakers are for their price. The speakers have a very balanced sound and do not have harsh horns at higher volumes that I have experienced with Klipsch speakers.

Even more impressive is the level of customer service that comes along with the speakers. When I ordered my speakers in the comment box of my order I requested advice for the best placement of my new speakers. Low and behold the next day Dr. Hsu himself called me and asked for a drawing of the room I planned to use them in. In a few hours he sent me his recommendations as well as bracket recommendations. It is so rare to have such a personal level of customer service these days.

Thanks again for your recommendations.
