Ok, I have been reading for weeks on the various speaker threads on these two speakers. I have heard the Tritons but not the Sierras so I have no basis for direct comparison between the two.

I am looking for input from folks that have owned or compared both themselves. Please no third hand "I have a friend who..." stuff. I need real facts from folks that can describe the real differences in these speakers for 50/50 music and HT in a 15X18X10 room. Amp will be an Integra 80.3 with either an Outlaw 7900 or 7700. I don't own of it yet but that is the plan with my budget for the whole HT which is yet to be built.

Please don't hawk you favorite speaker as I have already limited my selection to these two from many choices and for many reasons.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Which tweeter for the Sierra? The soft dome, or upgraded RAAL ribbon tweeter?

RAAL would be my first choice. I like the ribbon sound better than most domes.

I haven't heard them, but since the Triton 2s have built in subs, for HT, they may be the better choice unless you plan to add a sub to the Sierra Towers.

The golden ear triton are one hell good looking speaker that offers a lot but things pretty much ends here. As a consumer perspective the Ascend is a much more truthful and honest company while the golden ear is too much marketing oriented. There specs leaves much to especulate. There is no range db, so how do we know whats is there 18 or 16 hz are at ?(spec on manual differ from site, that makes me go hmmmmm....) With all those drivers, the only thing i worry is there integration. Also, they listed one round subwoofer in driver tech on their site but it doesnt seem like it is part if the triton 2 drivers configuration, so thats something that makes me go hmmmmm...again. Interesting my rythmik only needs 370 rms to power the 15 in, but there 5*7 woofer needs 1200 watts...go figure.

Sorry for ranting but i least thats one perspective this company gives to me.

I have personaly spent some time with the GoldenEars and to be honest, I was very very underwhelmed. I thought that my Definitive Technology BP-30's sounded better. I also own a pair of Ascend Sierra-1's, and while they arent the towers, they sounded much better than the GoldenEars. The Ascends are more detailed, more reveiling, wider + deeper soundstage, better imaging, clearer midrange, the only thing the GoldenEars have on the Ascends are the bottom end bass. If I were in your shoes, I would go with the Sierra Towers with the Horizon center as that would give you a hell of a setup!

I would recommend that also.

The problem with having a subwoofer built into a main speaker is that it is almost impossible to put the speaker in its best location and also have the subwoofer in a good position too.

IMO one is way better off having a separate subwoofer that can be placed where IT will perform best.

With either system I am planning on a subwoofer...maybe two depending on space, sound, WF etc.

Thanks for the responses so far. It helps.

Having owned the Tritons there is no doubt about it......... the Ascends are more accurate, true-to-life speakers.

Thanks for the insight Brian, it truly helps to get direct feedback from someone that has heard both and can be objective about the differences.

What would you use as surrounds with the towers? I was thinking the CMT340s since they appear to be adequate without breaking the bank.

The 340s will work fine but they're pretty big for surrounds (21"H). I'm using a pair of Sierra-1s as surrounds with the towers but only because I already owned them. Have you looked at the 170s or 200s?

I use 3 sierra 1's with a rythmik f12se for HT and music and i love them. They blend together so well. I read/auditioned for months and am very happy with my decision.

The variation you're seeing on here is probably most likely due to system matching, its really the wrench in the whole review system. Some speakers will "make magic" with one particular electronic and nothing else. My advice is buy the best amplifier you can afford and then start the audition process, buy several pairs of speakers (with a 30-60 day return policy) and return the ones that don't make magic. Every few years or so you should try some new ones as driver technology advances. But when you really find the ones...you'll know. (and then stop reading AVS and shopping!)
