Hey guys! Finally got a bigger house and I have room for bigger speakers now! Unfortunately, my budget has mostly been spent on house so I would really like to keep it around $800 or less for the 3 speakers. Preferably around 600 or less. I am willing to wait for items to go on sale.

So I have to denon avr591 and really like it. I will probably never have more than 5 speakers (not counting sub of course). Basically, I want to keep the quintet surround speakers and upgrade the 2 fronts and the middle. The room is a pretty good size. 20x25 with 14' ceilings. Is it do-able with the 591 at 75watt per channel? Would most speakers work well with the quintets still being used for surround? Is there anything that would work great keeping the quintet center speaker and using that budget just for left and right tower speakers? Thanks guys.

KEF iQ70 speakers were $250ea this morning.

matching center IQ60C

I'm sure they'll be on sale again shortly.

Quintet center is too small to use with larger speakers. The other Quintets will be fine as surrounds.

Big room means you should look at speakers capable of high output levels. These BIC PL speakers come in just under your budget, and should do well for your situation

(these speakers are designed to be pushed up against a wall for HT)

I second the Infinity's. Great sound for the money. With ceilings that high you definitely need high output, I would also look at JBL as they are known for their output. If you like aggressive music (rock, rap, etc.) and action movies/games they are a great choice.

My wife shot down the infinitys just because they're so ugly! They'll be up front and center in full view. Not many reviews on any of the others but I will watch to see if they go on sale. Anyone have experience with the klipsch kf-28's?

Is my receiver too small to push something like that without an external amp? There are preouts but don't have an amp at this time. Seems like there's not really a great choice of 5.1 receivers that put out much more than 90 watts/channel. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I believe you can do better than the Klipsch - however, you may like them

You can buy a 7.1 receiver, and still only use 5.1

Did your wife look at the KEF, that was reccomended?

Also, what does your wife think about white speakers with a black grill? Boston is a good one.

The Denon 991 doesn't have the preouts required for an amp to power the front speakers , you'll need the 3311 or 3312. Or if you want to go back a couple of years the 990/3310.

The AVR-591 doesn't have any preouts except for surr back which wont help you, I own that receiver.

They key question for all this - do you plan to listen at extreme mancave levels, or moderate levels?

The biggest impact will come from good subwoofers - and they have their own amp.
Tower speakers will sound much better than little sat speakers > that tend to sound
big in a walk-in closet. A bigger Denon receiver with more amp power can help out.
If you really want to do amps - then this Yamaha receiver has pre-outs.
