I have a Denon 2113 receiver with a Jamo Sub. Im looking for 3 front speakers and I want to add the rear speakers later. I have about 400-500 to spend but would like to stay closer to the $400 range. Living room is 17 x 16 but is open to the kitchen. I would like for the speakers to be fairly small, no floor standers. Thanks.

Are you wanting bookshelf speakers as with a stand, even bookshelf speakers become floor standers.

Polk Audio bookshelf speakers is a good starting place.

Yeah your right. They would be bookshelf speakers on stands.

In that case, close to your stated budget of $400.00/$500.00, three of the Polk Audio TSi200's will get you where you want to go.

And if you can, for best results, it's recommended to be sure and stand the center channel at the vertical as opposed to typically laying the center channel on the horizontal plane.

Might even let go of my Def Tech Pro Cinema 600 5.1 set... These are a great speaker

These are only 10.7" tall and you can use one as a center channel - look at buying 2 pair
I have owned Polk TSi/Monitor and RTi speakers - and I much prefer the Definitive SM350
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882325059

These are only 9" tall and I like them as much as the Definitive, and the bass is strong to 60hz
and I can play them in a 12 x 20 room - and the Jamo sub will take some pressure off them >
Same thing, Buy 2 pair and use one as a center - Cambridge S30
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_779S30DO/Cambridge-Audio-S30-Dark-Oak.html

Cambridge does have a center - I would still aim for the S30
