Hi all,

I am moving in a few days. It is a studio style condo. The main rome is about 11’x 15’. I just bought a samsung 51” 3D Plasma. I am looking to buy a home theater system. I am looking to stay around $1000-1500. I was looking at the Onkyo TX-NR616 ($400), but am open to suggestions. Also looking for suggestions on speakers.

Thanks.

My want to check the AVR forum about the 616. Seems it still has issues.

As for "best" and "system"- hard to say without what you plan to do with it. Movies only? Music only? Combination? 2.1, 3.1, 5.1, 7.1 or .2 for all?

Then there is the whole subjective take on whatever someone recommends. It may sound good to them but not to you. You REALLY need to try and listen to as many speakers in your price range as you can or plan on spending considerable time buying and possibly returning many speakers you want to demo in your room.

looking for at least 5.1 may want to get 7.1 for future needs. I do a lot of gaming on Xbox 360 and watch a lot of movies (Netflix). I don’t currently have a blue-ray player, but plan on getting one soon. Maybe even a 3D blue-ray player to take full advantage of the TV. I want to make sure the receiver has at least 4 HDMI inputs. I understand that everyone has their own opinion on what the best is. I am just looking for suggestions, since I have just started looking.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I have a small room like yours, if you want really good speakers, jump on the energy rc line before they are gone. I would go with 4 energy rc-10's (vanns has for $219 a pair- they used to be $600 pr), an rc-lcr center center ($299- used to be $650). Thats 5 great speakers for $737 shipped, which leaves you $763 for your sub, and receiver. I can tell you the Denon's pair really well with energy speakers. You should be able to find a denon 2112 for around $450 (last years model that was just replaced a month ago ). The last component, your sub, the energy S10.3 can be had at new egg for $199, great sub for the money. Although, if you can, I would save a little money, hold off on the sub, and try to find a B stock Hsu sub, or a B Stock Outlaw sub. I just picked up a B stock Outlaw Lfm-1 plus, and it can really shake my small room.

My room is similar in size 13x14x9. I have 5 NHT superzero 2.0s and a Def Tech sub. I can seal off the room if needed and do listen to it that way most of the time.

I have a relatively low powered AVR (HK AVR 1600 that is rated at between 40 and 50watts/channel depending on what HK literature you read).

It has enough power for movies and gaming, not enough for music though. Your AVR has nearly double the power so it would do well with the NHTs.

I like the speakers. With a little more power they would be even better. At $100 each they are a bargain IMO.

Excellent suggestion for the front stage, with the 340's upfront I have a seamless integration and plenty of output for my 14' X18' X 8' listening room, I have the 170 as surrounds. These speakers continually amaze on a daily basis. I'm powering them with an Onkyo 709 only, I have external amps that I've used but felt there was no sonic benefit over the amps of the 709. The 340's in my opinion are very neutral revealing speakers especially of front end sources, with good source material they really shine and also reveal flaws in recorded media. I don't know much about the Energy sub but have seen many favorable reviews of this sub especially at it's price point. Ascend has exemplary customer service, AC4L is also a very reputable ID company. Hope this helps .
Cheers Jeff
