We recently had a room addition. It's 24'x16' with cathedral ceilings and an open floor plan. We have hardwood floors with area rugs. I have a 11.2 surround system. I would guess I spent around $5k for everything. Not including the TV. What I've found is the subwoofer is the most important thing. It just doesn't sound good without good bass. Getting good bass is the most difficult thing in a large room. I went with 2 emotiva subs on closeout, but if I were buying now, I would definately get the outlaw sub on sale now. After that, I agree the center and fronts are the next most important and if you have room for 3 identical speakers, get that. if not, get a center that's from the same line as the fronts. Surrounds are the least important, but don't get too cheap. They should be of the same general quality as the fronts. If you're like me, if the weakest link doesn't sound right, it will bother me to no end. I'm probably suggesting spending more than you want, but buying something you won't like is throwing money away.

Exactly. I really want to do this right. But of course, with the renovation we have to put in some cost controls.

Get 3 of these for LCR
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/543758931
$180 each or $540

Outlaw sub for $600

2 of these for surrounds
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/542021944
$180 each or $360
They can be switched from di-pole/bi-pole so you can choose which sounds better to you.

total = 540 + 600 + 360 = 1,500. Right on your preferred budget. All 5 are from the same line so they'll appearance match

its at your top end of budget but well worth it imo.

Plus one on the Ascend Acoustics, best bang for the buck from what I'm hearing. And check out Rythmiks fourm. He's releasing a new 12" version soon.
